“Come Together” and “River” - More than Just a Collection of Old Poems
Translation: Andrew Ryan
This was the summer in which we all “came together.”
Strictly speaking, “Come Together,” is not simply the name of a musical group. We like to think of it as a musical endeavor encompassing the hopes, aspirations and the tremendous efforts of a much larger group of people. These people came together to create this labor of love, a literature-based album entitled “River,” inspired by Lai Ho, the father of the “Taiwanese New Literature” movement.
In 2004, our group of student volunteers began organizing the “Lai Ho Song and Poetry Festival” as part of the Lai Ho Cultural end Educational Foundation’s celebration of the 110th anniversary of Lai Ho’s birth. We planned to promote the literature penned by this “warrior of the ages” in a variety of different ways – through radio broadcasts, a song and poetry festival, a literary walking tour, a musical, and the production of an album called “River.”
But the sheer enormity of our plans crippled the project from the very start.
Nevertheless, work on “River” commenced on schedule. In late spring, 2005, we came together with a love for the works of Lai Ho as our common denominator. Among our number were young musicians with far-from-ordinary backgrounds: Lupin, a surgeon and sometime-singer at Witch House; Nan-hong, a graduate student who dropped Chemistry to study Taiwan Literature; Bichhin, who started out in agricultural studies but also ended up in Taiwan Literature; and me, who escaped halfway down the road to a career in medicine. Our performance at the 14th Annual Lai Ho Awards that spring was well received by the audience, which included professors, scholars and experts in the fields of history, literature, music and language.
