大家都知道用Google來搜尋資料，也有不少人知道把Google當成一個語料庫來檢驗英文或中文的用法。因此，Google是輔助翻譯、教學與研究很好的工具。但也有人對於Google Search的結果表示質疑 (見以下學生來信)。

Dear Prof Su,

I had a little trouble using Google to check if a usage was correct or not. For example, the phrase: "Cool souvenirs at” only got 49 hits, but it is correct English. Or “we must protect wildlife” only got 120 hits. Although the phrase is correct, that fact is not easily seen from the results.

Also when I Googled whole sentences, regardless if they were correct or not, usually the number of hits were very small. I think perhaps the Google search works better for phrases or commonly used phrases. Once the phrases get more specific, the search results do not clearly indicate how one sentence is CLEARLY more correct and more idiomatic than another. I had the most success with the last example—the difference between “getting soaked” and “being soaked” The reason being they are both relatively general phrases.

其實，只要了解搜尋的一些訣竅與陷阱，Google Search的結果是蠻可靠的。講者打算把他幾年來使用Google在教學與翻譯上的心得與大家分享，並以高中英文課本、捷運英文標示中有問題的英文等實例，透過Google Search來驗證。

Make sure the phrases you want to search are enclosed in quotation marks.
