First, be a loyal Toastmaster. No matter how busy your life is and how lousy the economy is, join the Toastmasters meeting if you still think it is fun in Toastmasters. Secondly, join the contest as you will gain more energy and knowledge in the battlefield. Thirdly, be a trainer. You learn more than a student when you are a teacher. Fourthly, be a leader. To serve members help you understand how to stand on others’ fee and how to encourage people. You will also be visionary from the process of leading a team or members. Those will develop your evaluation skills.

1.         You have hit the record in D67 to win three awards in a national contest, including the Champion in the English Evaluation Contest, the 2nd place in the Mandarin Evaluation Contest as well as the 2nd place in the Mandarin Humorous Speech Contest. What are your secrets to your winning and what encourages you to join contests in different languages

l             I have joined Toastmasters for 10 years. I believe in learning by doing in Toastmasters, where provides me an environment to learn from others. For me, I like to take challenges.  Being a member of New Century Bilingual Toastmasters Club, I am able to join both Chinese and English contests.

Moving forward, if I had time, I would like to join a Taiwanese language club as well to add colors to my life.

2.         Why do you want challenge yourself by taking part in 3 speech contests? How did you make the decision to participate in the 3 contests in the beginning? After making the decision to join the contests, have you ever thought that you would win in all speeches? Did you set up any goal to win

l             By taking part in 3 contests gave me the opportunity to experience the beauty of different languages (culture).

In 2007, I joined NCBTC as a member. I remembered when the President asked me to join the Mandarin speech contest with her eyes-open staring at me; I dared not to say “No.” So, I signed up for the contest immediately.

I, however, have never thought I would win in all contests; I just tried to enjoy the contests. I told myself that if I got the passport to the District level contest, then I would have two-day holidays with a bunch of supportive Toastmasters there.

3.          Among three contests, what do you think is the most challenging and what is your winning strategy
l             For every winner, it’s never easy to outrank the other contestants and win a contest. It’s my privilege to stand on the national stage with so many outstanding contestants, and fight a beautiful fight!

I appreciate Claire Wang, the first place winner of the Mandarin Humorous Speech Contest, who brought the audience a hilarious story with her sound voice. I am honor to be the second place winner. The Mandarin Evaluation winner, Heir-Hon demonstrated her persuasive skills when delivering her speech. I was honor to be her rival. There were several native speakers joining the English Evaluation Contest. I think I am just lucky to win the Champion.

4.         In the process of your preparation, did you encounter any difficulty and how did you overcome them

l             My weakness was I had too many ideas to express in a speech. Thus, I had to cut my speech and slow down my path so as to manage time well. Besides, this was my first time to join a Mandarin speech, so I had to be consistent with a same langue in a Mandarin speech contest. However, old habit dies hard; I was deducted 5 points because I altered an English vocabulary in the Mandarin Evaluation Contest. As the saying goes: “Good habit kisses you, bad one kills you.”

5.         Do you have any coach to help you when you joined the contests? Who are they? And how did you work together to win? What were your winning strategies?

l             In Toastmasters, every one is your coach. However, you can always learn from the mistakes and turn to be better. I failed in both English Humorous and Evaluation Contests in 2005. Since then I have studied the winners from Toastmasters International as well as D67.

To prepare for these contests, I spent a lot of time watching those DVDs in the D67 Evaluation contests. I learnt from those champions, including L.J Lamb, Helen Chen and Chao Huang. In Fall Convention, I met Jones Sun, Champion of the Pan Asian Chinese Evaluation Contest, Joy Tsai, Area I3 Governor as well as Irene Tsai, President of NCBTC, they all gave me crucial hints. I shall buy them big meals if the trophies could be switched into cash.

6.         Since you have won 3 speeches, do you have any goal for your next level learning in Toastmasters?  Will you join the next national speech contest till you win the championWhy and why not

l             The answer is “Yes!”
To write a second-to-none champion speech is every Toastmaster’s dream. The purpose is not just the trophy. Just like what David Brooks said: “We don’t join the contest because we are the best; we become the best because we join the contest.” I think the stage of Toastmasters provide you opportunity to discover your inner potential.

7.         Do you have any advice for those who would like to join the contest?

l             There are four tips I would like to share with those who would like to be “Somebody” some day in the contest as below.

All in all, take every step of your Toastmastering is a guarantee to success in the Toastmasters journey as well as in your real life.
