ABOUT DCB
The Development Center for Biotechnology (DCB) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1984 for research and development (R&D) in biotechnology. It plays the role of flagship for Taiwan’s biotech industry, and is bestowed with the mission to promote Taiwan’s biotechnology development through researching biosciences, developing technologies, building infrastructures, training professionals, catalyzing synergy of governmental, academic and industrial endeavors in biotechnology, and bridging Taiwan’s biotech industry with international R&D communities.
We are currently focused on four major areas: (1) environmental biotechnology; (2) herbal medicines; (3) pharmaceuticals, including small-molecule drugs and new formulation development; (4) biopharmaceuticals, including monoclonal antibodies, recombinant proteins and vaccines. At present, the disease categories selected for drug development at DCB are cancers, diabetes and infectious diseases.
HUMAN RESOURCES
The DCB has an elite group of scientists and an efficient support staff dedicated to the development and research objectives. Out of the 400 employees, 85% possess academic degrees, including 91 Ph.D's, 162 MSc's, and 66 BSc's.
HISTORY
(1) 1984~1986: The DCB d eveloped Taiwan’s biotechnology industry, by planning development strategies and goals. We succeeded in attracting biotech elites and trained professionals in this field and applications in agricultural、special chemical, and environment protection.
(2) 1987~1990: The DCB established core technologies and R&D processes focused on transfer of key technologies. By this time, the government had established a 6-year national multi-industry construction program and contributed to ten other innovative industries. We were responsible for the development and strengthening of pharmaceutical R&D programs, medical health care technologies, and pollution prevention initiatives used to develop other technical and industrial applications.
(3) 1991~ Present: The Taiwan Government has focused on its biotech policies supporting commercialization. During this period, the DCB has firmed up its biotechnology applications in pharmaceutical, agriculture, special chemical, and environment protection divisions. The DCB has continued to collaborate with local companies by training R&D specialists serving for Taiwanese companies and using technology transfer to spur domestic industries with the hope of upgrading the local biotech industry in the face of international competition.
FORWARD
First, the DCB vertically links the academic sector with the industrial sector through the promotion of applied scientific technology. We emphasize the consolidation of advanced technologies and resources and the exploration of opportunities for product development. Our pilot plants develop technologies derived from academic research and subsequently transfer them to private industry in order to reduce their R&D costs.
Second, the DCB horizontally adapts suitable biotechnologies from around the world and transfers them to domestic industries. For the final phase of commercialization, projects are selected based on conformity with market needs and direct participation of industrial partners. This is to help Taiwanese companies uphold their product advantages in the face of international competition. In addition to laboratory facility access, the DCB also offers consulting services on market and industrial information research for domestic and overseas enterprises, academic institutes, and government agencies.
