Dear Student
In recent years the University has become very concerned about excessive celebrations outside some examination venues by a small minority of students. Whilst we all accept that students will want to celebrate the completion of their exams in various ways, some forms of behaviour (throwing things such as flour and eggs or spraying liquids to name just a few) are not acceptable.
We are concerned that there is real danger of this behaviour leading to more serious incidents which could result in personal injury and, in some locations, traffic accidents. It can cause dangerously slippery pavements which could lead to personal liability for any injuries caused, as well as liability for the full cost of cleaning up.
Moreover, actions such as these can have very much more wide-reaching consequences than might be immediately apparent. They can lead to complaints from residents, motorists and passers-by, with the police and Environmental Wardens becoming involved. Last year these actions resulted in a number of students being fined and others formally warned by these authorities.
We are sure that none of you would wish to be the subject of police action, possibly leading to a criminal record or be subject to disciplinary action by the University, which could prevent graduation.
We wish you good luck with your examinations, and do not wish to spoil your fun after they are over, but do please take note of the risks associated with excessive high spirits and be considerate of others.
Yours sincerely
