Don’t write what you are not familiar with.
It seems that it is hard to set the tone for your life when you are still looking for a job and in my personal opinion, this period of time looks like the intro music.
1.The people you meet are metaphors in your life.
“A” is my friend who gave me a book several days ago. This book’s author, Chen Fang-Ming, is a historical professor and a poet who had been involved a political area; he has been back to the world of Chinese literature and he wrote a book about those had influence on him. He thinks that those people he met in his life are just like metaphors that you would find out the meaning afterwards and realise that you have been guided by them.
A told me a chapter from this book ”How deep the snow was last night” that is Chen Fang-Ming was very young and enthusiastic about writing poems; one day, he sent his pieces to Hwang Chun-Ming, a master of Taiwanese literature . After reading Chen’s work, Hwang Chun-Ming just said, “Did you know what you wrote about” “Don’t write what you are not familiar with”. Chen Fang-Ming felt the comment was powerful and deep that he had never received.
This story reminds me of an very old serial ”Anne of Green Gables”. Anne, the leading actress in this story, is addicted to writing romantic stories with beautiful phrases but not every-day English; her work is rejected by many publishers. She publishes her first book until she adopts Gilbert’s suggestion of just telling stories happened around you and those people you know.
Hwang Chun-Ming inspired Chen Fang-Ming to write something with your true heart rather than pretended sadness; Gilbert makes Anne understand that what can touch people is sincerity. I am not very sure why A shared this story with me; maybe the story and the friend are metaphors in my life and I will figure out the meaning in the future.
2.What I wish I knew when I was 20…and what I shall know when I am 30.
The author of the book ”What I wish I knew when I was 20”, Tina Seelig visited Taiwan and I attended her speech with my friend ”L”. I was curious about 2 things: the first thing was what she would deliver and the other was how she delivered. I have to say that she is good at attracting audiences’ attention by using slides with vivid video; her speech did inspire people with true stories.
After the speech, I and L went to a café in my neighbourhood and the name of the coffee shop is salt peanut. This reminded me of the wonderful time in many coffee shops with L; we might just share what we suffered from work or life or we did look for different and sincere opinions from the other. L said that she forgot to ask a question in the Q&A section which was for those 40 what they should know…
It is a good question and actually, Tina mentioned this in the final chapter of the book that was to be ready for changes. I wonder, in addition to the answer, what issues might be involved. According to Confucius’s though, people at the ages of 30 are supposed to be independent and successful in many ways such as careers and families and people at 40 should not be confused with what happened on them. This might be the implication for my inquiry.
The café shop also provides a small room for displaying some artistic work and the topic of this month is an exhibition of abstract paintings, Soul exchange project2009. This reminded L of her plan about exhibiting her pieces in a year as the topic ”My friends”. Since she has learned sketch for several years because of in the company with her daughter in the beginning, she has had her style of drawing that I adore very much. From my personal opinion, her painting work looks like poems with multiple meaning depending on your understanding or imagination. For example, in her drawing, I am the person with long hair and the end of the hair attached lighting bulbswhich symbolise that I have many different ideas.
I was very excited about her plan and I volunteered to join her plan or shall I say that I was so happy and threw some ideas at that moment that “might” “kind of” forced her to let me in ? I am not sure what I should know at 30 but I know what I should do.
