The Promised Land of Orchard Island - Canaanland Workshop
14:35:59 | Top

Dictated by Zhong Can-Jia and Quan Yu-Man

The Lord said, “I have indeed seen the misery of my people in . I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering. So I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey—the home of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites.” (Exodus 3:7-8)

Prelude:
The Promised Land is a land flowing with milk and honey, a land that God prepared for the Israelites. I sincerely hope that this promise would bestow more blessings on the Tao aboriginal people.
The Canaanland Workshop is situated next to Langdao Elementary School in Langdao Village .

Yet this plan did little to help in the long run. So I often prayed to God, asking Him how we may better our living conditions.

One day as I was singing a psalm, an epiphany illuminated me: how about promoting the sister’s handicrafts ourselves? And the idea of establishing a workshop gradually formed, because only then would we have the chance to market and sell the handicrafts. Ever since, we have prayed each day for the realization of that idea.

The Desert of Canaanland :

In 2002, we received compensation from the government for nuclear waste. The grand total was NTD $252,000, so we decided to spend it on the construction of the workshop. Considering the tight budget, we first collected many stones as the building material. Luckily, the government was also building a road in Langdao Village and left many unused stones, and these leftover stones became our building material.

Another time, a grouting worker came to us and inquired if we needed any concrete? He said that the construction site always had some extra, and he would give it to us if we required. We were dearly touched by the stranger’s generosity, and truly believed that he was an Angel which God sent us.

However, as the construction in Langdao Village was completed, the provision of concrete ended too. Yet before we took any alternative measures, another director, who’s in charge of building sewers in the village, asked if we needed concrete, sand, or steel bars? Because he saw that the workshop was half way done. He could give us some construction materials, although not very much. Again, we were deeply touched by such an offer from a stranger who recognized our needs. The director even ordered three cement mixers to help us complete the foundation of the workshop before the sewer construction project ended.

Because of all the timely assistance, throughout the construction process we were convinced that the will and grace of God must be in it, or else why would there be so many strangers who cared for building of the workshop as if it was their own?

Canaanland at Present:
All the handicrafts displayed in Canaanland workshop are designed and made by the Tao aboriginal women. This workshop is like a melting pot, a place that welcomes everybody regardless of their religious belief, race, or gender. The workshop is happy to exhibit and sell any kinds of crafts as long as you are willing to provide them. Once works are submitted, the workshop will buy all of them, and the revenues will be given to the makers who may have financial difficulties.

Local cuisine is also served in the workshop. This not only provides part-time job opportunities for the young people of Tao, but through purchasing the food from women and the aged, we also help to alleviate their financial problems. However, a reservation is required if you want to savor the local cuisine.
In Canaanland workshop, you will experience a native and traditional cultural tour and have the chance to try a craft yourself.

 The Promise of Canaanland:

I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you. The whole land of Canaan , where you are now an alien, I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you; and I will be their God. (Exodus 17:7-8)
The workshop participates in the restoration of protophytes. On the one hand, this ensures the provision of raw materials for the handicrafts; on the other hand, it functions as a teaching material for outdoor teaching. In addition, in the future, the workshop plans to set up a camping area for different religious sects who wish to hold some outdoor activities.

 Genesis:
I had been the pastor of Hongtou Village ’s Presbyterian Church for five years, and during that time I learned that most members of the congregation were suffering from financial difficulties. So I came up with the idea of the sisters making handicrafts, and sent the finished products to other parish churches, asking them to help us sell them. The total revenue was distributed based on the portion each sister had contributed.
