began as strangers in a cirlce. And in silence a space was created for participants one-by-one to step forward and raise a topic that s/he wants to talk about.
The process is organic allowing the space and respect for each individual to be him/herself. Participation can be loud, silent, near the snack table, in conversations on the side, while standing or sitting.
After posting of the topics, we immediately self-organize into groups to discuss the topics raised.
At this time, the Open Space 4 Principles and Law of Two Feet are applied:
- Whoever comes is the right people: this alerts the participants that attendees of a discussion group are the "right" ones to be there simply because they care to attend.
- Whatever happens is the only thing that could have: this tells the participants to pay attention to events of the moment, instead of worrying about what could possibly happen.
- Whenever it starts is the right time: clarifies the lack of any given schedule or structure and emphasises creativity & innovation.
- When it's over, it's over: encourages the participants not to waste time, but to move on to something else when the fruitful discussion ends.
The Law of Two Feet means that if at any time during our time together you find yourself in any situation where you are neither learning nor contributing, use your two feet. Go to some other place where you may learn and contribute.
Following 3 rounds of discussion, each groups reports were posted to the wall. At this time everyone is invited to read what was discussed and add notes of their own contributions to the discussion and correct anywhere that they may want to change their own text.We return back together again as a large circle and announce actions we'd like to take following today's discussion. Whoever feels the personal inspiration makes the announcement. Here, Tim is sharing his action plan idea.
Then we break into small groups to brainstorm more approaches to enhance the action plan.
We return once again together as a large circle, laying each groups handwritten posters of action strategies on the ground and each group announces highlights of the fruits of their collective thinking.
Following the check-out of each person sharing a few words about how coming today has affected them, Alice of 台灣原住民族文化產業發展協會 lead the group in a singing song symbolizing the unity of our spirit and the mutual wishes of good will to one another. The song is sung as follows:
地球感受我們的承諾
我曾記得 山海最初的氣息
山川記得 我們發出愛的訊息
也曾記得 來到人世承諾
地球也能感受 我們的承諾花香鳥語 傳來愛的細語
金色的陽光 散下愛的祝福
任何的生命 都值得珍惜
我們的星球 要更加寶貴
擁抱著希望 守護大地啊
讓愛心帶動 我們的世界改變。
Very beautiful song!
Singing together, arm-in-arm represented powerfully the unity we share despite varying differences in our backgrounds.Where we came as strangers, we left as friends.
