當Beatles已經站在迷幻年代的先鋒群中，Beach Boys仍然遲疑於青少年市場中，年輕聽眾隨即將他們視為保守陳舊的代表。該年夏天，萬眾矚目的蒙特利音樂節(Monterey Pop Festival）本來是一個絕佳的扭轉契機，但也被白白浪費掉了。雖然Beach Boys很快地重組，並在1967年底發行了回歸基本路線的專輯「Wild Honey」但重回嬉皮與樂評心中世界頂尖團體的願望，卻因時效上的延遲而消失殆盡。

當樂迷、樂評與電臺企劃的期待一再落空，大家也傻眼了，對他們未來的計畫，也無可避免地投以懷疑的眼光。一如預期，「Wild Honey」和1968年的「Fiends」招致了各方的惡評。即便如此，由零碎的歌曲片段與混音過程中所保留的錄音細節，仍使得這些饒富趣味的唱片存活了下來。一直要到樂迷辨識到1969年的Beach Boys已經與1966年大為不同的事實後，「Wild Honey」略為成型的blue-eyed soul風格，與「Friends」中輕鬆的流行交響樂架構，才重拾大眾的喜愛。進入前二十名的單曲"Do It Again"被視為這群老江湖的懷舊之作，但1969年的單曲"20/20"則表現得更好。但Capitol唱片仍然放棄續約的機會，一年後，Beach Boys改與Reprise廠牌簽約。



在Brother/Reprise廠牌下所發的第一張專輯，是1970年的「Sunflower」。歌曲分別由不同團員譜寫而成，加上他們重拾60年代光芒萬丈的合音，使這張唱片顯得格外優異。1971年推出的專輯「Surf's Up」，名稱取自一首從Smile計畫中重新加工的歌曲。雖然唱片本身受到喜愛，但其間所展現的不再是個風格一致的樂團，更多的反而是團員間迥異的個人興趣。錄音期間，Dennis Wilson開始與樂團保持距離，不願意再擔任鼓手一職。樂團只好在1972年初，從南非搖滾樂團the Flame中找來兩位成員：鼓手Ricky Fataar和吉他手Blondie Chapin（Carl Dennis前一年製作了他們在Brothers唱片旗下的同名專輯）
