彼得葉若（Peter Yarrow）、保羅史圖基（Paul Stookey）和瑪莉崔佛斯（Mary Travers）三個人，早在50年代的時候，就已經分別活躍在音樂界了。1938年出生於紐約的彼得，曾經在康迺爾大學專攻心理學，大學畢業、取得文憑之後，由於對音樂的熱愛，他放棄了本行，前往格林威治村賣唱，被星探發掘了，但是他卻希望以合唱團的姿態來進軍歌壇，因此他的經紀人就建議邀請保羅加入。1937年出生於巴爾狄摩的保羅，青少年時代就參加一些搖滾樂隊，擔任吉他手。後來，他就讀於密西根州立大學的期間，由於具有幽默而流利的口才，開始在一些夜總會裡面擔任節目主持人。大學畢業之後，他跟家人遷居紐約，白天在家裡開設的化工廠幫忙，晚間則到格林威治村打工，繼續擔任節目主持人，並且還表演脫口秀，而他所服務的俱樂部，正好就在彼得賣唱的酒店對面。在經紀人的陪同之下，彼得向保羅提出了合作的建議，沒想到卻遭到了拒絕。



儘管保羅婉拒了彼得的邀請，不過他倒是還蠻喜歡彼得這個人的，所以經紀人就建議他再花點時間考慮看看。在彼得的構想裡面，他的團體除了要有一個像保羅那樣充滿喜感的男聲，還要有個清亮的女聲，於是他們又開始去物色那個理想中的女團員。他們來到了一處民俗藝術中心，看到牆上張貼了一位女歌手的照片，那就是瑪莉。1936年出生於肯德基的瑪莉，是在格林威治村長大的，少女時代就迷上了民歌，除了到處賣唱之外，還曾經在民歌宗師比特席格（ Pete Seeger）的唱片裡擔任過和聲的工作，也演過舞台劇。彼得跟她談過之後，她對於組成這樣一支團體非常有興趣，於是她和彼得兩人又跑去再找保羅。在保羅的公寓裡，三個人言談甚歡，聊著聊著，就唱起來了。他們唱了一首「 Mary Has a Little Lamb」，結果效果好得出奇，也讓保羅就此改變了心意，同意加入。



彼得 、保羅和瑪莉三個人花了七個月的時間練習彼此的默契與和聲的技巧 ，並且從1961年開始公開露面表演 。1962年二月，華納機構簽下了他們 ，開始推出他們的唱片。同年五月，他們 「 Lemon Tree 」打進排行 ， 讓他們一炮而紅 。 接著 ， 在同一年的秋天 ，「 If I Had a Hammer」成績更好 ， 得到了排行的第十名 ， 同時榮獲 「 最佳合唱團體 」和「 最佳民歌錄音」等兩項葛萊美獎。這是他們自己最鍾愛的歌曲之一 ，裡面對政治、對世情都提出了批判 ，也樹立起後來他們許多「抗議」歌曲的模式。事實上，他們三個人之所以能夠情投意合，除了音樂上的理念相近，更因為他們對於政治的思想都是一致的。他們不但在歌曲中唱出自己的想法，還經常一起積極的去參與各種群眾運動，而且數十年如一日，並不像許多人在稍微上了點年紀之後就冷淡下來。
