流行音樂界之王Michael Jackson ，1958年 8月29日出生於美國印安那州(Indiana) 蓋瑞市(Gary)，五歲顯露其在歌唱及舞蹈方面的才華，與四位兄長共同組成了Jackson 5 （傑克森五兄弟）樂團，隨著年齡的增長，脫穎為團中的靈魂人物。

Jackson 5 成立之初，表演的範圍雖僅限於一些俱樂部、大專院校及宗教活動場合，卻相當受到當地居民的喜愛，其中包括了全美第一位黑人市長Richard Hatcher （理查‧海區）。1969年，經由市長引薦給正在該市演唱的Diana Ross（黛安娜‧蘿絲），Jackson 5 因而結識Motown（摩城）唱片公司的大老闆Berry Gordy （白瑞‧高弟）進而簽約，並於年底發表首支單曲I Want You Back，迅速登上排行榜首，Jackson 5 就此展開其二十餘年的輝煌音樂生涯，創造了I Want You Back、ABC、The Love You save、I'll Be There、Mama's Pearl、Never Can Say Goodbye …等熱門暢銷曲，名氣勝過同期出道的The Osmonds（奧斯蒙兄弟）。



在一般人的印象，大都以為Michael 個人音樂生涯的開始是從1979年於Epic唱片公司發行的Off The Wall專輯開始，其實早在1971年，Motown唱片公司 便栽培Michael 成為一位優秀的藝人，於該年為他發表了個人首支單曲Got Be There，1972年四月打進單曲排行Top 4 ，而之後推出的Rockin' Robin、I Wanna Be Where You Are、Ben相繼擁有No.2, No.16 及No.1的佳績，其中Rockin' Robin是翻唱Bobby Day 1958年No.2暢銷曲，Ben 是首同名電影的插曲。

Jackson 5 1975年投效Epic 唱片公司並改名為The Jacksons，1976年他首次參與電影的演出於「The Wiz新綠野仙蹤」片中飾演稻草人一角，與Diana Ross、Richard Pryor 並列三大主角，受到大眾及影評的讚賞，此外，Michael 與Diana Ross所合唱的主題曲Ease On Down The Road 在美國與英國單曲排行榜分別獲得No.41 與No.5 不錯成績， Michael因為這部片子結識了音樂指導－－Quincy Jones，為日後的合作關係建立起橋樑。
