1979年，Michael發表了在Epic唱片公司的第一張、亦是Quincy首次為他操刀的專輯Off The Wall，推出佳評如潮，連一向不過度讚美人的樂評家 Davish Marsh都在Rolling Stone雜誌裡稱這張專輯是"現代音樂的精典之作，Jackson 的聲音充滿年輕氣息卻熟練－－是最好的詮釋方式，超越了文字及想像的空間限制。Off The Wall包含了舞曲節拍、搖滾吉他、靈魂的激切，是一張心靈與音樂的完美組合。整張都是暢銷曲－－She's Out Of My Life、 Off The Wall及Rock With You......等，將1979及1980年的空中頻道賦與充沛的活力。

這張專輯在Billboard 榜上一直停留到1984年才下榜。首支單曲Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough由 Michael 親筆創作，登上排行冠軍同時為他贏得了葛萊美"最佳藍調男歌手"獎(Best R&B Vocal Perfor- mance, Male)，是他的第一座葛萊美獎。接著，Rock With You在1983年蟬連四週冠軍，兩支單曲銷售超過百萬，隨後發表的單曲皆有N0.10佳績，使得首張專輯便擁有四首No.10單曲，成為Billboard 榜上第一位同張專輯擁有四首No.10單曲的藝人，Off The Wall成為1980年 Billboard 雜誌年度最佳靈魂專輯，Michael 個人則成為該雜誌的年度最佳靈魂單曲藝人。



1980年，Michael 又重歸The Jacksons，與兄弟們趁勝追擊地推出了專輯Triumph，跟著兄弟五人於1981年初展開全美的大型巡迴演唱，足跡遍及39個大城市，所到之處無不吸引數萬名樂迷前來觀賞，尤其以亞特蘭大的奧米尼體育場(Omni Stadium)的一場演出最熱烈，據估計他們這一趟行程共吸引了六十萬名樂迷，所得收入高達美金550萬，因此被列入該年度高所得的藝人之一。

1982年，Michael 開始著手新專輯Thriller的準備工作，這次他不僅負責所有歌曲的譜寫，更與Quincy共同製作、參與編曲工作。另外還邀請到Paul McCartney與他共同演唱The Girl Is Mine這首歌，此曲率先年底推出，而專輯則是年度最後一個禮拜（聖誕節前夕）問世，當專輯推出締造首週在Billboard 專輯排行榜上No.11 的成績，單曲The Girl Is Mine登上排行亞軍。
