兩年後，他成為Motown的最好的藝術家之一，錄製了一系列極有才氣的單曲。在這段時間內，他的專輯就象Motown的別的專輯一樣，是一首最佳單曲和一些令人愉快的歌的組合。也只有Wonder被允許去偶然的錄製一些反映他自己增長的社會意識的歌。例如他在Bob Dylan中的熱門的"Blowin' in the Wind."。直到60年代末，不但他自己的唱片在熱門榜上有名，他還有別的許多Motown的藝術家提供了好多歌和資料。包括the Spinners' "It's a Shame"還有和Smokey Robinson.合寫的"The Tears of a Clown"。60年代中期開始，史提夫佳作迭出，其中絕大部分是情歌，如表達純真愛情的《我是如此愛她》（I Was Made To Love Her）、《Never Had A Dream Come True》超凡的音樂才華讓史提夫•汪達15歲前就成為全美家喻戶曉的知名歌手。



隨著他的創造力猶如跳躍一般的飛快的提高，Wonder不久就開始感受到了被Motown的嚴厲的製作和發行合同的束縛。當他的合同於 1971年期滿後，Wonder自己個人錄製了兩張唱片，並以它們作為他和Motown談判合同的工具。這兩張唱片給了他對自己的專輯以及他自己的歌最大程式的藝術上的控制。之後不久，這兩張唱片Where I'm Coming From和Music of My Mind---就被發行了。
