雖然木匠兄妹獲得全世界歌迷的愛戴，可是相對的，各方而來的壓力便接踵而來到卡本特兄妹的身上。凱倫長年受到厭食症的影響，對於自己的體重相當的敏感，在紐約醫院的兩個月治療期間，她恢復體重一下增加了30磅，然而快速的體重增加反而使凱倫更為心痛。1983年2月4日，32歲的凱倫，被發現倒臥在唐尼的父母親家中，沒有心跳後送至唐尼社區醫院，20分鐘後宣告死亡，當天凱倫正是要簽下離婚協議書。

凱倫的驗屍報告顯示，凱倫死於神經性厭食症，解剖顯示，凱倫出事時第一階段為心臟衰竭，第二階段由神經性厭食症引起，第三階段則是低體重以及長期的衰弱疾病的惡病體質造成。事因則推測為凱倫長期濫用吐根糖漿，而這藥物是用來給誤服毒物的人催吐，不過，目前並沒有證據顯示凱倫的死是因為濫用吐根糖漿而死。



凱倫的葬禮在四天後2月8日於唐尼聯合衛道公會派教堂舉行，凱倫的屍體放置在白色的棺材中，身上則穿著粉紅色的衣服，至少有上千名送葬者表達他們最後的敬意，其中凱倫的好友朵絲•漢米爾、奧莉薇•紐頓薔、佩托拉•克拉克 、克莉絲緹娜•法萊爾、狄昂•瓦薇克也有前來，而與凱倫疏遠的丈夫也有出席葬禮，並且將他的結婚戒指丟入棺材內 (根據瑞•柯曼書籍《木匠兄妹：不為人知的故事》)。

凱倫之死也使的媒體註意到神經性厭食症以及神經性貪食症，許多社會名流也在公開場合談論到他們的飲食問題，包括崔西•戈德以及戴安娜。醫學中心以及醫院也開始接到民眾對於他們飲食問題的諮詢電話。在凱倫死前，大眾對於這兩種疾病並不是很瞭解，也因此患病時並難以察覺以及確認是否患病。
