這首歌據說是源自一段真實的故事，Skeeter Davis的“A Dear John Letter“，這首歌的曲風明亮輕快，然而在越戰的時候曾經在戰地前線遭到禁撥，因為美國軍方擔心會嚴重影響前線軍人的軍心士氣。其實這也不難理解，因為歌詞內容就是在講兵變的故事，我想大部分的男人都頗能體會這首歌的意境與心情。一位名為John的男子在海外服役作戰，因為時空因素的阻隔，導致收到女友信件的時候才得知女友已經琵琶別抱，有趣的是女友的新歡是另一位名為John的男子，形成蠻弔詭的現象。因為這首歌太經典有名了，後來”Dear John Letter”就成了分手信的代名詞。
