On a jet plane leaving Hong Kong.
It was a rare clear day, even from four thousand metres above ground I could still see the lights of unknown cities below. (The airshow was malfunctioning, so frustrating)

Maybe it can be said as a visual metaphor for how I had been speeding past cities without understanding them for the last four months hurr hurr hurr. I plan to revisit those places some time in the future anyways.

But still, the whole four months has been pretty meaningful.
I have said before that I am "born in Hong Kong, grown in Canada, befriending mostly Taiwanese people, and immersed in Japanese culture", and undoubtedly Chinese. So these fours months have been a journey for me to connect with my identities, somewhat. Other than having massive lots of fun.

在香港探望多年沒見的親戚, 還重回出生地, 順便過了新年.
在日本雖然未能造訪秋葉原, 不過日本橋也不差.
在北京當了好漢, 還移除了一些偏見.
在西安親身接觸從小就嚮往的秦漢文明.
在台灣重會故知, 算是解了一些心結.
在廣州第一次回到我家的祠堂, 向老祖宗鞠個躬.
在開平對華僑這種身分有了新的認識.
在澳門舊地重遊, 做十五年前做的事.
在雲南見識了一些奇岩怪石, 還丟了黑金剛的一部分.
而如今正在返回溫哥華的飛機上.

Still, feels very surreal. huh.

事發始於dk從雲南回來香港之後的翌日, 環遊世界中的howard桑從上一站泰國來到了香港.
那天, 我們三個人(howard, andy, 敝人) 一起去吃火鍋, 胡言亂語間howard突然間問我:
"香港有可以去hiking的地方嗎?"

So basically we have here someone who came to Hong Kong for the first time asking me if there is nature in a city famous for its cityscape. This is gonna be....interesting....
(And as I gather afterwards, he isn't an avid hiker himself.)

Come to think of it, I don't ever remember hiking in Hong Kong.
But despite impressions, Hong Kong actually has a varied landscape that's quite suitable and challenging for hiking! Didn't realize, since I was too otaku to care until now.

到了今天, 我和howard兩人就一早長途跋涉來到西貢了. andy要上班不能來.
西貢算是香港人的後花園, 因為這裡遠足跟海產都很出名, 不過有點遠就是了.
(基本上dk覺得地鐵去不到的地方就很遠這樣) 顧名思義, 遠足就是要去遠的地方嘛~



在西貢市中心 (above) 吃完一頓不怎樣的早飯還要再搭一程local resident's bus才到了今天遠足的起點.
howard: "whoa this trip is invovled"
yeah, it doesn't usually take this long just to go for a hike, but i thought if I am going to take someone for a hike anyways why not go somewhere special.

Shortly after we came back to Hong Kong we went to one of the city's most famous tourist attractions.
And unlike much of my posts so far during this trip, this post will be whiney and negative.



And the gondola trip there was the only impressive part about it. You could see the airport and stuff.
If you don't have to wait 2 hours to get on, that is.



And this is what we climbed, supposedly the world's biggest bronze buddha.
It'd be more impressive if I hadn't come here before.
This time it reminded me how for some places once is enough.



And here is a rather tall mountain.

And then we had to wait another two hours in the serpentine lines of humanity before we can ride the gondola down in pitch darkness back to civilization. The end. booo

Perhaps it's just the tastelessness about how the gondola management company managed to make what was supposed to be a Buddhist sanctuary into a commercial tourist trap village with useless theatres showing cartoon films that supposedly makes you able to "walk with the Buddha" and be enlightened. WHAT HAPPENED TO LIVING FREE FROM DESIRES

This is the last eventful day of my Yunnan trip, the next day was defined by shopping, eating, and plane riding.

And despite how the map looked, we stayed within the city limits of Kunming, it's that big.
First we went to Shilin, not the night market in Taipei but the Stone Forest (石林) that my mom happened to see on TV in Beijing and why we are here one month overdue away from Vancouver in the first place. Oh, it's wonderful alright.

今天也很好寫.

整天就在坐車了ww
從麗江沿原路回昆明, 中間只有吃飯跟上廁所才有下車的機會, 全程十小時耶耶!

旅行團的行程有包括"遠眺三塔寺", 所以路經大理的時候司機給我們下車遠遠地看三塔寺.
三塔寺又名崇聖寺, 也就是在天龍八部裡面的段家天龍寺啦~



很遺憾, 除了前面三座塔之外其他建築都是後來重建的. 原本的崇聖寺在很久以前就被火燒光了.



and this is actually how far we were when we saw the temple. that clear picture of the three pagodas was taken through my zoom lens lol. 不過這裡有油菜花田, 有點蒼山, 有牌坊, 也不錯啊 =D

到昆明的時候太陽快下山了.
看一下金馬碧雞廣場, 去吃飯, 就完成今天的行程了.



這兩個牌坊也有好幾百年的歷史了, 那四個字好像是乾隆的字跡喔.

今天去了夠多地方的, 多到不怎麼想寫了....
以前在日本的時候也是圖多字少, 就這樣吧.

麗江好像很有名. 有些到雲南的遊客還直接跳過昆明大理, 只來麗江.
麗江有什麼這麼吸引呢?

說到大理很自然就會想到天龍八部.
本來滿心期待可以去捅段譽一刀, 其實大理不是到處都是天龍八部的蹤跡.
因為大陸改革開放前金庸著作都被列為禁書, 所以天龍八部對大理影響不是很大.
反而在大陸人心目中說到大理比較會想到一部叫五朵金花的電影呢.

今天的行程是先逛大理, 再搭三個鐘頭到麗江.

今天早上撘了飛機到雲南昆明, 行程是直接坐五個鐘頭的旅遊車到大理, 所以今天整天都在坐交通工具啦~
也沒什麼好說的.

楚雄遠方有個塔.


And the better view is always on the other side.

No, I didn't take this picture. I wish I did though.
This is a picture of the Kowloon Walled City (九龍城寨), an amalgamation of everything I find fascinating about dense debilitating apartments of Hong Kong. I would very much like to visit the place, if it wasn't demolished about 14 years ago.

I did go to the site though, where a park is now situated.


To be exact, this is the second time I've been to the park, but the last time I was there (5 years ago), the whole theme of the park was completely missing the point about what made the city famous.
Things changed a little this time.
