Did my alarm go off last night? 昨晚，我的鬧鈴響了嗎？ 好吧！這些年來，我的中文退步一些，英文卻沒長進多少，不中不西是也。
N今早上班前，一邊戴上他的肥大手錶，一邊問我： “ Did you hear my alarm go off?” 我漫不經心地回答： “ Yep, it shut down itself.” N ： “ No! Did it go off?” 我開始一臉狐疑地看著他，他解釋 go off不等同於turn off關掉，而是turn on itself自動或不經控制地響起來。例如：The alarm went off last night. 或是 Our door ring went off this morning. 這個情況跟take off (起飛、離去)很像，off不是on and off的off，反有 “脫離”現有狀態而展開一個新情況的含意。 可不可以讓我再阿Q 一下呢？至少，我老早就不用 “close” and “open” lights, stoves, computers…。turn on and turn off 已經很自然地成為我開關電器的英文邏輯。我知道，這也是傻蛋自我安慰的邏輯。
