All the familiar devils
So far so close and far too close
You hide and seek
In the sac of darkness
The cul-de-sac of sleep
Shadows file past
None stays and none goes away
Oh yes they are so familiar
They void and people you
On a first-name first-person basis.
Across the remote numbness of the night
Blows a possibility of landscape
Where luminous pebbles, faintly, of words
Trail to or from something out of nothingness
You close your hands, your eyes, your nonexistent tattered wings
Fossilizing and dissolving
Into sand dunes that shift and stretch
Into hour after hour of drifting, minute-by-minute
Into the indifference of pain.

Let me travel the width and length of you
Finger by finger, lip by lip
Let me learn all the scars and signs
The tight tender taste of tongue
The sandy smell of sweat
Every move synchronized, every sound,
Every last nuance through the night
An undulating mountain of possession and obsession
Solid and warm
With eyes closed and wings open
You drink me in embraces
As I breathe and memorize you
Into a tattoo across the heart

This house we live in
Is fraying at the edges
The secret leaks and short circuits
Can catch you unawares
There are some who suddenly move out
Leaving no forwarding address at all
While the rest of us try a bit of
DIY maintenance, seeing
Traces of betrayal on the painted wall
A shooting star may crash through the roof
And let in pain and panic or a different light
But leave me a window to look out of
A window to constantly clean
To witness whatever passes by

Now they lie aside, asleep or awaiting
In the afterglow of love
