TAIPEI, the vibrant capital of Taiwan, distills the best of what Asian cities have to offer — great street food, crackling night life, arguably the world’s best collection of Chinese art, and hot springs and hiking trails reachable by public transport. With interest in mainland China surging, Taipei — one of the most underrated tourist destinations in Asia — offers a look at a different side of China, one that escaped the deprivations of early Communist rule and the Cultural Revolution. Here is a Chinese culture (some contend that it is uniquely Taiwanese) that practices bare-knuckled democracy and has preserved traditions thousands of years old in a way that was impossible to do on the mainland.

Taiwan’s Bullet Trains Can’t Outrun Controversy

TAIPEI, Taiwan, Dec. 28 — The sleek, bulbous-nosed new bullet trains here look like they are designed to whisk passengers across wide-open spaces. But on this congested island, they represent the start of a 180-mile-per-hour commuter train system.

Taiwanese President and Wife Are Accused of Corruption

BEIJING, Nov. 3 — Taiwanese prosecutors said Friday that they had enough evidence to bring corruption charges against President Chen Shui-bian, a development that is likely to increase pressure on the independence-leaning Taiwanese leader to resign.

Also on Friday, prosecutors indicted Mr. Chen’s wife and two former aides on charges of misusing money from a secret diplomatic fund under Mr. Chen’s control. They said Mr. Chen might face formal charges when he no longer enjoys presidential immunity.

TAIPEI, Taiwan — Think of most tech gadgets, from the iPod to the PlayStation, and an engineer on this island of 23 million probably has had a hand in its creation. While India and China share the spotlight as emerging giants, Taiwan is already a huge behind-the-scenes maker of tech products.

Taiwanese companies produce three-quarters of the world's notebook computers, two-thirds of its personal digital assistants and nearly 70 percent of its liquid crystal display monitors, according to Taiwan government statistics.
