China – The Challenges
In our continuing series on China, Tavis talks environmental issues with Kongjian Yu and examines some of the challenges facing modern China. He also takes an inside look at the lives of migrant workers and their children and their struggle to better their lives.
Considered China's leading landscape architect, Kongjian Yu has been an urban and regional planning professor at Peking University since '97 and is the founder and dean of PKU's Graduate School of Landscape Architecture. He's also the founder of Turenscape, an award-winning firm with a practice that covers architecture, landscape architecture and urban design. He holds a Doctor of Design from Harvard's GSD and has lectured at more than 30 universities worldwide.
During the trip, Tavis visited a migrant workers' compound on the outskirts of Shanghai, where he talked with some of the workers and their families and came to realize the extent of the country's migrant challenge, as people come from the countryside to find work in the cities. This episode also looks at the U.S. media focus on China's growing wealth and the problem of its widening income gap.

China – The Economy
In the first show of this week’s special broadcasts on the People’s Republic of China, Tavis discusses the country’s economic and technology boom with Victor Yuan, board chair of China’s most prestigious polling firm, and with venture capitalist Kai Fu Lee, CEO and chair of Innovation Works and one of the “godfathers” of Chinese technology.
Victor Yuan is CEO and chairman of the board of Horizon Research Consultancy Group. Founded in '92, Horizon is one of China's leading providers of market research and strategic consulting services for large multination and Chinese companies. It also conducts survey-based studies about trends in Chinese society and politics. Yuan has a Ph.D. from Peking University, an MPA from the Kennedy School at Harvard University and a master's degree in law.
After holding exec positions with several tech companies, including Google, Microsoft—where he founded Microsoft Research China in the late '90s—and Apple, Kai Fu Lee co-founded the Beijing-based venture capital firm Innovation Works. Lee is also credited with developing the world's first speaker-independent continuous speech-recognition system and was formerly an assistant professor at Carnegie Mellon, where he earned his Ph.D. in computer science.

China – Roundtable
On the final night of the week’s look at the People’s Republic of China, Tavis hosts a panel of prominent Chinese Americans for a wide-ranging discussion about the country, including the good and the bad of its economic boom, the environment, human rights and the complexity of U.S.-China relations.
Dominic Ng is chair and CEO of the Southern California-based East West Bank and chair of the Committee of 100, an organization that aims to help strengthen U.S.-China relation. He designed the transformation of East West from an S&L serving LA’s Chinatown residents into a commercial bank with over $21 billion in assets. Ng is active in a variety of outside endeavors and was the first Asian American chair for the Los Angeles United Way Campaign. The Hong Kong native came to the U.S. in '77 and spent a decade as a CPA for a major public accounting firm.
Named by Forbes as one of the Top 25 Notable Chinese Americans in Business, John Chen is chair and CEO of the software giant Sybase and past chair of the group of prominent Chinese Americans known as the Committee of 100. He served on President Bush’s Export Council and as co-chair of the Secure Borders and Open Doors Advisory Committee and remains active in international relations. The Hong Kong native came to the U.S. as a student in ‘73. He graduated from Brown University and holds a master’s from California Institute of Technology.
Dr. Cindy Fan is the associate dean of social sciences and a professor of geography and Asian American studies at UCLA. She serves on the faculty advisory committee of the Asian American Studies Center and is co-editor of two major journals (Eurasian Geography and Economics and Regional Studies). She's also author of the book, China on the Move: Migration, the State, and the Household. Fan is one of the most-cited China geographers and holds a master's from Chinese University of Hong Kong and a Ph.D. in geography from Ohio State.
Film producer Janet Yang is a pioneer in introducing Asian culture to the West and representing American cinema to China. Her film credits include the acclaimed Dark Matter and exec-producer of the groundbreaking The Joy Luck Club. The Emmy and Golden Globe winner got her start in production working with Steven Spielberg, becoming his eyes and ears in China for the filming of Empire of the Sun. Named by the Hollywood Reporter as one of the "50 Most Powerful Women in Hollywood," Yang is a cultural ambassador in bridging East and West.

China – Education
In this fourth episode of the special series on the People’s Republic of China—the final program on the road—Tavis talks in depth with some of the students at one of China’s top schools.
What Americans call "high schools" are known as "middle schools" in China, and Beijing's 101 Middle School is one of the most academically challenging schools in the world. The students engaged Tavis and Princeton professor Dr. Cornel West in a rich and frank dialogue about how the next generation of leaders views China and the U.S.

China – The Hip-Hop Culture
In this special episode, a Black entrepreneur shares the backstory of his successful pilgrimage from North Carolina to Shanghai and his unique perspective on Chinese culture and the role “race” plays in this once isolated country.
In '01, Andrew Ballen quit Duke Law School, to the dismay of his physician father, and moved to China. He didn't know a soul there or speak a word of Chinese. While teaching English in Shanghai, he felt homesick for hip-hop, a genre of music that was mesmerizing to local youth, and subsequently started a night club. A decade later, the NY native has hosted a number of radio and TV programs seen all across China and runs a burgeoning media empire—all in pursuit of a dream of communicating with people he’s never met and seeing if they shared something essential about humanity.
