I was only there for the first fifteen minutes of class, because I had a concert at school. For the blog, you told me to write about my concert last Sunday. For the fifteen minutes I was there, I handed in my homework from the previous week and I also received a giant lollipop and some snicker bars. The giant lollipop was orange and black, and had about six hundred calories alone! We also took a little trip to room twenty five because this week we will be joining the eighth grade class, and we will be helping them study for their test or quiz. After that little detour, I went to my concert at Conard High School, which started at 2:30P.M. I play the violin in Philiaharmonia and this concert was a fall benefit for the school. We played several pieces, combined with the choir and the other orchestras, Symphonia (underclassmen). We played pieces from the Water Music Suite, and my favorite from this suite is Aria, because it sounds light and airy. My favorite piece from the whole concert is Czardas, played by two violin soloists. After we played our several songs, we listened to Symphonia, then to the many choirs, such as the solo choir and Lux Voce. Our next concert will be in November, called the Pop’s concert; this is where we combine with the bands, like the Jazz band. We will be playing Viva la Vida by Cold Play with two vocal soloists, Troika a Russian themed song and other familiar songs. I had fun last week, but I didn’t like how I missed Chinese school.

Dear Marilyn Lao Shi,
Last Sunday I learned many new things. Before class started you handed us fun size snicker bars and a huge lollipop for Halloween. Then, once the whole class arrived we visited the class of the 8th grade so we knew where to go next week for class. When we got back to the classroom, we started class. First we learned the More New Words in Lesson 12. We translated, spoke, and wrote them in our notebooks. One of the things that you taught us was that in China they say 后边 and in Taiwan they say 后面,but both words translate to the same thing which I find interesting. After, we learned the building blocks on the same page. Next we had a break and were invited to the 8th grade classroom to recieve even more candy! When class resumed, we watched a show on a trip to Xi'an. I learned many things about the former capital of China in this video. I learned that the trains in China are very fancy and comfortable, very different from the trains in America. Another thing I learned is that if I ever visit China I should try dumplings because it is the main dish in Xi'an. We saw a clip of the Terracotta warriors and how they made them which I find very cool. It is still hard to believe how much work went into creating the soldiers nearly 2,200 years ago. These are the things I learned this class and sadly I won't be attending class tomorrow because of a class trip to Washington D.C. . Please e-mail me anything I need to do for next class and see you next week!

Ni Hao Marilyn Lao Shi,
Thank you for the Snickers and the giant lollipop! Last week you took us to room 205 where we would have our class next week with the eighth graders. Then we learned the words on page 74. After we turned to page 75 and reviewed the More New Words. Then we read the Building Blocks on page 75 and translated them to English. I learned that in China they say 前邊(兒)and in Taiwan they say 前面. Everyone in the class also said a sentence in Chinese using the phrase “when I was young...” Then we had break. During break we went to the eight grade classroom to get more candy! After break we watched a video about Xi’an in China. I learned that Xi’an was the original capital of China before Beijing. The person in the video took an overnight train from Beijing to Xi’an. I saw that the taxis in Xi’an are green instead of yellow. I also saw that there was a lot of traffic in Xi’an and the person in the video had a hard time crossing the street. Another interesting thing I learned about in the movie is how they put different types of meat in dumplings. A restaurant put fish, frog, and pigeon meat in their dumplings! Another interesting thing I saw in the movie is the man writing calligraphy. When the woman in the movie tried to write calligraphy the man said that he could tell that she didn’t understand the Chinese culture at all. The woman also had a foot massage in Xi’an for a really cheap price. At night in Xi’an they put on an amazing water show. Last week was really fun! See you next week.

Last week, I learned the More New Words in Lesson 12. I also learned the Building Blocks in the same Lesson. I also learned what those words meant and what they translated to. I also learned how to say the words in Chinese well. That was in the first half of the class. The second half was spent watching a movie. The movie was on Xi'an where a person went to Xi'an to learn the culture of this place in China. I learned that Xi'an has the oldest intact wall which is the museum. I also learned that the trains are fancy and have beds and service on them. The taxi cars are green in Xi'an instead of yellow like here. In Xi'an , there also is a lot of traffic. The air pollution there is really bad and you can see the air pollution hovering in the city. In addition, Xi'an is very famous for there dumplings because they make so many there and there are so many different types of dumplings like frog dumplings or duck dumplings. There are foot massages in China for really cheap prices. In Xi'an, one of the biggest religions is the religion of Muslims in China, there are 60,000 Muslims. Islam originally comes from China. In addition, the soldiers that were buried underground were not supposed to be found, but found centuries after they were built. There are soldier replicas that are sold in stores that range from prices from $7 to $2000. The water show that shows in Xi'an is the biggest water show in all Asia because tons of water is used and it goes on all night every night. It is fun to play in because people try to run through the water and try not to get wet, but in the movie, it looks hard to do so.
