1. Why the 228 Hand-in-Hand Rally?
On August 23, 1989, fifty years after the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact, more than two million people from the three Baltic States--Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania- joined hands to create a 600-kilometer human chain and demonstrated their determination to regain their independence. Their effort received enormous international attention and support.
With our third democratic presidential election and first ever “peace referendum” approaching, China once again instills fear in the Taiwanese public with the military threat.
On the 57th anniversary of the 228 Incident, we want to remember the past as well as demonstrate our optimistic outlook for the future. We will bring more than a million people together to form a 500-kilometer human chain along the west coast of Taiwan. This chain will symbolize a wall created by the bare hands of the people - regardless of ethnic background, gender, age, or political differences - to protect the freedom and peace of Taiwan.
A single voice alone is easily drowned, but more than a million voices will be heard throughout the world. With our hands together, our message is clear. We want peace, not war. We have the right to decide our own future and it is time for us to take Taiwan’s future in our own hands.
2.What’s the 228 Incident?
The incident started with a wrongful shooting of a cigarette vendor by an officer of the ruling party, Kuomintang (KMT), on February 28, 1947, igniting a nation-wide rebellion. KMT forces soon swept through the island squashing disturbances with random and premeditated killings. In its wake, nearly 30,000 Taiwanese lives were robbed and a country was shackled by fear.
