To Oxford College & Cafe Opium
perladipace 在天空部落發表於11:50:00 | England

So I'm temporarily skipping Hamburg, Luebeck, Frankfurt and London and jumping straight to Oxford. Will fill the gaps later on 'cause my big travel photo book thng is taking a bit of time to edit & I've got lots to catch up! Our last stop of the EU tour of July 2008 was to drop my sister off at Oxford and my parents & I will fly back to TPE. Oxford in summer was definitely more crowded than other times. We stayed at a old town house right behind my sister's college. It was definitely SMALL and the floor and bed creak. But it's an interesting experience staying at one of those old and tiny town houses that you often see at touristy places like this. The place in the photo is...

Check Point Charlie & Berlin Wall
perladipace 在天空部落發表於20:47:30 | Germany

Checkpoint Charlie was a sort of a "immigration" point on the edge of the Berlin wall which separated Berlin into the Allies' West Germany and the Soviet's East Germany. Many from the Eastern part attemped to escape via various means to get to the other side of the wall and many tragic stories of how many were tortured and killed as a result of attempting to run away from the eastern part. The landmark in the photo is near the Charlie Check Point but I'd say it doesn't have much to do with the tragic stories of the 2 halves of Berlin. But you can see more photos of what remains of the area near Check Point Charlie in the Chinese-word link below.

Lafayette & Porsche Sports Piano
perladipace 在天空部落發表於14:10:34 | Germany

Galeries Lafayette has become like a sort of landmark in Berlin. This place has lots of shops, malls and place to go for food. & a concert hall is nearby too. Berlin is relatively new compare to other European cities. Largely because it was almost totally destroyed during the World War. So they had to pretty much rebuild eveything. So you don't really see a lot of the old things around here (although there are some exceptons which I'll post another time) and the new energy (especially with new design ideas and fashion) makes this place one of the...

Berlin's Dark Underworld (WW II Bunker)
perladipace 在天空部落發表於11:10:50 | Germany

If you have not gone into the underground world when you've visited Berlin, I think you have missed a large portion of what Berlin was about. Unlike the glamourous shopping places built underground in a lot of cities (eg. Montreal, Tokyo, etc.), this is very extensve, dark, gloomy and clausterphobic undergound network of bunkers built to shelter the cilivilians during air raids. We started out with finding the bunker where Hitler committed suicide but then we came across this tour to the underground world of Berlin (you're not allowed to go to the bunkers on your own). It's one of the few bunkers that were not destroyed during the de-militarizing activity after WW II largely due to the fact that...

Berlin's Magnificent Bundestag
perladipace 在天空部落發表於10:28:50 | Germany

If you were to name one of the coolest modrn builings in Europe, I think Berlin's Bundestag would have been one of them. The Bundestag is heavily guarded by security and they control how many people they allow to the roof terrace and teh cupola at one time. It's a bit of an hassel when you have to wait outside in the rain for a long time. But the good thing was entrance to such great attraction is FREE! In a place where using washroom in a fast-food restaurant might require some "tipping", this is quite a treat! Once you get into the cupola, you can alk around the edge of the dome all the way to the top of the glass column. When you do so, you'll see a...

My Little Lonely Mozart
perladipace 在天空部落發表於23:26:29 | Austria

[ Figaro House, Vienna]
By the time we got to Mozart's former residence (the apartment where he lived when he was at the height of his career as a sort of "free-lance" musician in Vienna in the 1700s. There's ittle left of Mozart in the house since many centuries have past and people moved in and out and did modifiations to the building and the interior. But the museum (of the many "Mozart" museums in Austria) attempts to reconstruct what th place was like when Mozart stayed there and to recapture a sense of...

A Hundred Water House
perladipace 在天空部落發表於09:58:15 | Austria

If you really want t literally translate the name of the place "Hundertwasserhaus" into English, I suppose it'll sound something like the title of this entry. The apartment block is occupied and not open to the public. But tourists flock to this place nevertheless just to see the exterior of the building and the nearby equally-crazy Kalke Village (which is really just another building). Designed by the hippie artist F. Hundertwasser, the artist really followed his philosophy that "the straight line is godless" . So at this place you see a bunch of...

Walk-In Imperial Furniture Warehouse
perladipace 在天空部落發表於09:39:14 | Austria

Imagine a more like Home Depot or IKEA kind of warehouse for the furnitures that were once used in the palaces and imperial functions. I think it's a pretty neat idea.Hapsburg Empress Maria Theresa founded this "lumber room of the monarchy" where furniture and other household items not need at the court will be deposited here. If it were not included in the Sisi Ticket, I guess it's one of those places that people would just...

The Religious Sides of Prague
perladipace 在天空部落發表於23:37:09 | Czech Republic

The elaborate Baroque decor in the Church of sv Mikulas. Not a single thing in there doesn't look like it's doing something, which makes the whole church look rather 'busy' to the eyes.

Strahov Monastery

The Philosophy Hall - One of the two beautifully done library in the Strahov Monastery in Prague. It's truely impresive in the sense that the exterior and the rest of the monastery might not look anything like what's in the library, which makes the two elegantly-decorated libraries in a monastery founded in 1140 stand out. It is normally not...

Nerudova - A street of tradition and surprises
perladipace 在天空部落發表於22:46:08 | Czech Republic

Nerudova in Prague is one of the most colorful and well-preserved streets in Prague. & It has been said that it has changed little since Mozart walked them during his visits between 1787-1791. What makes this street so fascinating is that each house has its unique + fancy characteristic and pictorial house signs. Some has a large lobster above the door. Other signs include: a key, a red lion, 3 violins, etc. Nowadays, many of the larger + fancier buildings are home to the various countries' embassy in Czech Republic. Other ones become...

Golden Lane & Franz Kafka
perladipace 在天空部落發表於22:05:41 | Czech Republic

The Golden Lane at the Prague Castle is one of the most attractive and popular sight to visit with its brightly colored little cottages. It was originally built for the castle buards, then in the 17th-century, goldsmiths occupied the place and hence its name now. Then by the 19th-century, it becomes a place where craftsman and artists lived. The famous writier F. Kafka (the guy who wrote the story of a man who wakes up to realize he has turned into a big bug - Metamorphosis) also spent some of his life here. But of course, there is certainly more to...

Prague's Hidden Heart Beat
perladipace 在天空部落發表於21:04:52 | Czech Republic

People often associate Prague with the centuries-old buildings with elabrate floral and extravagant carvings. But there's also another side to Prague that's wholly modern and chic just like any other large cities. The place in the photo is the food court-like area of a mall near Namesti Republicky. The exteior of the building may look unattractive. But there's a sort of hidden heart beat inside the...

Dancing House

Also named "Fred & Ginger", the Dancing House in Prague was actually designd by a Canadian and and a Yugoslavian. It's suppose to look like a couple dancing. I think it's quite a cute house to be living in. :p More detail photos below...
