Hidden deep in the mountains with narrow winding roads leading to the estate, this private ground was closed to the public for decades and still remains a private property of the founder of a large media group in Taiwan. Here, we shared a day in Hsinchu to follow the footsteps of the designers who, decades later, re-packaged the... (continue reading...)

The main entrance into Nanyuan, the garden mansion, now a retreat managed by a design company that packed it.

This garden is about as old as me but it looks much older. Construction of this garden began in 1983 and took 2 years to finish. Its owner is the founder and owner of a large media corporation in Taiwan. For many years, this place served as the retreat for his corporate employees. Before 2007, it was also a place where leaders of other countries stayed at when they visited.

Even signs like this are full of spirit and artisic spirit.

In the room where our class was held. The whole room is perfumed by the natural scent of hinoki wood. Back in the old days, people could still build houses with those kinds of wood. But now that the number of such wood is so low that building houses like this is no longer possible here.

The One
Everything designed by The One under The One brand is a mixed a modernism with Chinese orientalism. This pottery cup is another smart play of design and practicality. The cup can only be half full because the base of the cup is moved up. The empty space below allows you to hold a cup of boiling tea without burning your hands. This piece has an interesting name with a play on Chinese words and double meaning.

The more "worth-it" seminar of the day. We got to hear how the founder of a small design company managed to spring from their main playground and get themselves into other fields and operations.

Nanyuan has a resort/hotel area with not many rooms (under 30?!) and that part is separated from the garden grounds. So on our way there for our lunch, we saw this cute sign mentioning ladies and gentlemen (in a old Chinese poetic way) to not enter if they were not guests at the hotel.

Ths is where the hotel rooms are and where we ate our lunch (on the first floor).

Inside the restaurant. As we entered the doors, we felt we were in a traverlers' lodge back in the older dynasties.

Our long tables before we were seated and got our food.

The utensils are also very cool. Not only the shape looks quite different, the fact that the 3 put together spells 2 words with this face up and another 2 words the other face up is also pretty cool. Again, the words here also take on symbolic meanings.

前菜
Appetizer

Our lunch meal menu.

This is one intersting desert. below all the colorful things here is something that resembles a soft, sweeten tofu.

Even the toilet is poetic.

This garden is more like a traditional Chinese garden in the Suzhou,Hangzhou area in China, except most of the building materials were largely sourced locally.

Window after anote rwindow.

Another scene in the garden.

Symbolism is a big thing in Chinese traditional gardens. This one in the shape of squash is meant to relate the seemingly countless seeds in a squash to the number of sons and daughters in the family.

This architectural decoration was intended to be a "wind chime" of some sort. Ideally, when the wind blows through, the empty wine pots will make some sounds. But the owner back then did not want accidents with "flying pots" (potentially) so now they're all filled with concrete and they no longer make any sounds.

The "home" theatre on this ground. The stage is a bit small (where the plant pots are) but I suppose it was good enough for its purpose.

Directly in front of the performance stage is a wall full of these decorative "windows". This one is a butterfly (& one of the most ornate windows). Butterfly here also carries another meaning (due to the way it's pronounced) that basically means "good fortune will stack up". The windows in various shapes reminds me of the Banciao Lin's Family Garden that we visited earlier. (see post here: [YPEX] Between Movement and Shadows )

Around each corner, it's like traveling back in time.

A very neat design on the building - This is for birds to stand on so bird droppings won't "color" the walls.
