Alicante - "The City of Light" is by no means a touristy town in mid December. Situated on the east coast of Spain, the town is a fascinating mix of Spanish exoticism and Mediterranean relaxing atmosphere. From the ruined Santa Barbara Castle on a monumental rock that dominates the cityscape, you see the modern resorts and yachts in the harbour and the colorful old buildings with the blue round domes. The December sun of Alicante is certainly deceiving. The big blue ocean and clear sky makes you think that itis summer all over again. But it was rather freezing! Below the Sanata Barbara Castle was Barrio Saint Cruz, the Jewish district full of brightly colored houses with narrow stairways all over the place. 



Exploring the district as if I were in a maze, the smell of home-made spaghetti, the chattering in the unknown dialect, the kittens napping on the stairs, every simple thing seemed magical. I waited outside of a tiny white-walled chapel for the Spanish to finish their 2-4pm lunch break. The world slowed down. I stopped in front of an imposing Baroque church where a wedding ceremony was taking place. 

Altea was about 15mins away from Benidorm


The white-washed walls of a small town by the Mediterrean coast was beautiful. I felt safe walking around by myself in the city and it was just great to take one’s time there in the narrow streets of the town.. & the smell of home-made cooking from the houses reminds me of home!

Bendiorm was a bit too modern I thought. There wasn’t much of its own characteristics.

Catedral of Girona.
Our airplane back to England from Barcelona actually departs from the airport in Girona so we decided to take a look around Girona before we headed back. The city was desserted on a sunday like a ghost city but it was definitely worth a visit with very old-looking architectures and dark streets.

The ghettoish-looking buildings along the main river in Girona looks great when viewed as one entity.
Girona is about 1 hour away from Barcelona by coach.

Casa Batllo. The exterior is suppose to be a dragon-like creature.
