Outside of our Hotel.

Urumqi on the news doesn't look that pretty and many people from other provinces in China and foreigners have cancelled their trip. But we went anyway because there's this saying: "The most dangerous place is also the safest place." There were police patrolling at.... (continue reading)

Xinjiang after the Juy 5th riot was rather peaceful but all the street corners were filled with militia and we had no internet and our we couldn't text or phone outside of the area with our own phones. After a night at the Hoi Tak Hotel, just by the heavily armed People’s Square (because of the July 5th riot that just happened) in the downtown of Urumqi, we embarked on our journey to the HOTTEST (and I mean temperature)... [ Silk Road ] Tibetan Temples and the "Ocean" in a Desert (Day 4)

We flew from Xi'an to our next stop Xi'ning to continue our journey along the Silk Road on 4 wheels from there. From there on, we had to travel at least a few hundred kilometers every day. There were several days when we had to be on the wheels for 5-6 hours in 1 day. After we got to Xi'ning, we went to a mystical Buddhist place and the largest salty lake Cinhai Lake (literally means: blue... (continue reading...)

The Beginning of the ancient silk trade route  - Xi'an

Some say, if you want to see the 300 years old China, you should go to Shanghai.
If you want to see the 500 years old China, you should go to Beijing.
If you want to see the more than 1,000 years old China, you need to go to Xi’an.
Because that's where everything started.

We embarked on a 13-day journey to “walk” the ancient Silk Road and travel through 5,000 years of Chinese history. (Day 1 -3 -> continue here...)

CMEF Spring 2009 in Shenzhen

[ CMEF Spring 2009 in Shenzhen ]
One of the largest medical device trade show/exhibition in Asia. Probably ranking second largest in the world after the "Mecca" in Dusseldof, Germany.

Some say going to exhibitions is like pilgrimage: costs quite a fortune & might not necesssarily get what you want. But I guess that'll depend mostly on your strategy and plannng.  Thousands and thousands of people like us from around the world make the trip to "pray" for what they hope to receive materially, "intellectually" or....

Morning Tea by Temple and Oceanfront View
View of the beach and ocean from the 16th floor of an apartment.

Imagine waking up to this scenery every morning (more photos in the full post). I think it's time to retire.. hahaha. Just kidding. On the very last day of our stay in Amoy, we took the super mountain bikes of our bicycle team in Amoy up a nearby mountain and had a great tea time up there with the fresh air and peacefulness. I guess it's only when you are at places like this that you don't really realize that you are actually hundreds or thousands of miles away from home. It's the people that...

In the Island Full of Pianos - Gulangyu
11:57:16 | China

Lost in the Island full of Pianos.
Piano = A keyboard instrument.  Piano = [Italian] Take it slowly.

Gulangyu is a small island but it's full of exotic colors. It was home to the many of the foreign embassies and it's one of the places in the world with the highest concentration of piano. You won't see any cars or bicycles on this island; it's simply not allowed. You might feel that you cannot stay here for long but you'll see: this tiny place slows down your daily pace. You need to stroll on the quiet streets, take in the scenery of this artisy island and listen to the sounds of quiet music playing behind the old brick walls. An...

Amoy, It has been a year
20:01:21 | China

[ Amoy, a year after ] 廈門 在相隔一年後

I have just realized that I was out of the country at least once every month, starting from November - Germany; December - US & Beijing; January - Xiamen. No wonder we're not going anywhere for this upcoming 9-day long Chinese New Year holiday. Traveling can get very tiring. I think it shows. But I am and still will be traveling. Last time that I was in Amoy was a year ago when we were just planning to move into this apartment. Then it became my first and last time staying at this apartment. My colleagues were moving to another apartment nearby a few days after I left. My room for the short stay was...

Stories in the Old Forbidden City & Summer Palace

Lots of stories about the Emperors, the Empesses, the Palace... especially of the last Chinese Dynasty. It's only when you are here, in front of these magnificient and overpowering buildings that you would feel that those that you ever studied in school or books are based on people who, apart from their social status at the time, are not much different from ourselves.

When you are in Beijing and if you want to see lots of things, you cannot avoid one thing: walking, and walking long distance. There are a lot of historical sites but they can be quite spread out. Even at one attraction, it can take you over half a day just to walk (and I mean nothing else; no looking around to the sides) across to the other end. This was the case for...

The Ming Tombs

The Ming Thirteen Tombs.
The construction started in 1409 and took 200 years to complete - the time when the Ming Dynasty (second last of Chinese dynasties) fell. It's one of China's largest imperial mausoleums.

The tombs lies in the northwest part of Beijing in a basin that's considered a precious Fungshui land for is geological shape (as you will see in the following entry) with Tiger Hill and Snake Hill guarding the entrance to the whole basin. The Tombs is where thirteen out of the fifteen emperors and their empress, conubine and maids to reside in their afterlife. They say, you only need to see one tomb then you've seen all because they are all built the same way. We went to the ...

The Great Wall is not Great for No Reason

When you go to the Great Wall, you don't just tell people you're going to the Great Wall; you tell people which section of the Great Wall you're going. Afterall, the Great Wall is about 7,350km  in length and it's the onl man-built structure that you could see from the moon with no visual aids. If you think you can "walk" on the Great Wall, I think you've underestimated it. Most of the time, I assure you, you have to CLIMB it becase the...
