「Scarborough Fair/Canticle」這首歌，中文可譯成「漁港廟會/短歌行」。「史卡布羅夫」是英格蘭約克郡之東的一個小漁港，Fair這個字本義為小型的博覽會或市集，商展，史港是英國鄉下的小地方，很少與外界接觸，因此這種一年一度的買賣，雜耍，商展混合式的集會，至今仍然留存了下來。另外Fair也有美女或愛人的意思，一語雙關，故也可以譯為「漁港女郎」。歌中歌者殷殷託人向他住在漁港的愛人致意，正好與此歌名稱呼應。


 

Canticle是常在教堂唱的頌歌，詞句多出自聖經，歌曲短而有力，輕快中帶著莊嚴的氣氛。

 

這首歌是1965年左右，Paul Simon 在英國民謠俱樂部巡迴演唱時，於約克郡附近發現了這首「漁港廟會」（或「漁港女郎」），覺得可以利用來表達六十年代美國青年對越戰的感受。因此，便與Art Garfunkel花了一年的時間，將此曲改編，加入一首類似Canticle的副歌，使之與「漁港廟會」溶合在一起，產生一種強烈的對照。這種合兩首歌為一首歌的做法，可以稱之為歌曲中的立體派，充滿了「後現代」的風味。
