Bersama Nore di Bangsar

Hari Isnin 25 April 2005, Shin pi lepak ngan cik mek molek bernama Nore. Bukan first time ajak, tapi for the first time, last minute Nore tak leh kuar, sebab stuck kat umah saudara. Dah banyak kali Shin tanya Nore nak pi maner. Nore pun blur. Actually maner2 pun samer kan. So Shin bilang minumlah dulu dekat mamak kat Telawi then pi tengok (sekadar tengok, bukan baca) buku kat Silverfishbooks.

Shin mintak Nore tunggu kat platform dalam stesen LRT KL Sentral. Nak beli tiket KTM Intercity ke Temasek dulu.

Dave's Corner pulak penuh sesak orang. So Lotuslah yang jadi pilihan.

Dah tiga jam duk kat Lotus. Nasi goreng yang Nore ordered tu tak kuasa nak abiskan. Air ais pulak tiga gelas dah bedal. Hmm... I wonder.

Lepastu Nore pi semayang. Around 4. Agaknya agar Zohor dan Asar buleh skali, haha. Tapi ade orang malas nak pi masjid walaupun tepi Bangsar Village shopping center je. So Nore cuba nasibnya kat Bangsar Village. Tak nampak sign surau. Jadi pi tanya jiejie kat information counter...

Nore : Excuse me, may I know where is the surau ?

Jiejie : I'm sorry,we dont have surau here...

Kan lah I dah kate, kat sini Bangsar, Bangsar people don't pray. Hehehe. Kenalah pi masjid. Sampai kat masjid pun banyak perkara lucu yang berlaku. Since Nore dah pun rakam kat blog beliau, baiklah korang baca kat entry tu je... Nore yang pity Shin kena tunggu tu pula berbaik hati sangat dan pinjamkan Shin baca Cosmopolitan yang baru beli tadi tu.

Abis semayang kitorang pun muncul kat Silverfishbooks. Sini memang tempat yang paling Shin minati. Banyaknyer buku yang jarang dapat kat luar. Saleh ben Joned ade, Catherine Lim ade, Pramodya Ananta Toer ade, Noam Chomsky ade, Farish Noor yang Taman Melewar ingat menghina Islam pon ade. In short, macam-macam ade. Bagi Shin, memanglah sini lepak, enjoy air-con, tengok buku, tapi kalau nak beli memang tak pernah. Yang pernah beli pun vcd 6horts yang merangkumi 6 short video Amir Muhamad je. Tapi Nore tak sama. Sasterawan masa depan ini membeli nineteen, iaitu a collection of stories by women from Malaysia, Singapore and beyond. Hmm...

Dinner was Burger King. Nampaknya Nore cukup gembira dapat beli buku citer baru. Shin pulak yang rasanya sedih sket sebab entahlah bila lagi buleh lepak ngan Nore skali lagi. Hopefully janganlah biarkan Shin tunggu lama sangat. Thanks Nore, feel so happy dapat lepak ngan kau :-)

Acai, Nore and me

Just now around 10pm, comrade Acai called me up. Just to borak-borak, and also updated me on some latest development.

Acai : "Eh budak UIA tu macam maner ya ?"

Shin : "Saper ? Pakdi ke ? Ataupun you mean Melati ? Melati kan I tak kenal..."

Acai :"Bukan laa., How's Nore... "

Shin : "Owh... Nore sehat kot, tapi dah lamer tak dengar citer laa..."

When I saw Nore online in yahoo messenger later, I told her that Acai kirim salam to her. But Nore doesn't wanna believe, "Tipu laa," she said. Hmm... Nak tak kau laa. Kan I memang jujur skali :-p

The numbers game

I really read that article with much interest. It tells us how ignorant are we towards our own country. I guess with the strong propaganda arms of the government, most people now probably know what's the name of our Yang Amat Berhormat Prime Minister. But what about, let's say, who is the Minister of Finance or Minister of Internal Security ? Hehe...

If you also read my other blog, Ada apa dengan ShinShin?, perhaps you have come across this article, Awek cun who tangkap feel in the train to Temasek. Okay now, don't imagine about the awek who tangkap feel in the train anymore. What I wish to mention is another sitcom that took place in the train.

As I said, the Third Class coach was filled up by many elementary school headmasters and headmistresses from Kota Padang, West Sumatra. So the middle-aged headmistress who sat next to me started to borak with two middle-aged local men across the aisle.

Headmistress : Berapa ramaikah penduduk Malaysia ?

Man A : Hmm... Dua juta patut ada.

At this juncture, I almost burst out in laugh. Luckily the other guy corrected him that Malaysia's population has already reached twenty four million. It's really hillarious, they have no idea about their own country at all. I hope people like him constitute just a minority, but obviously there are still many among us who are equally ignorant. Just ask yourself, what's the height of Petronas Twin Towers, KLCC ?

Love Letter

Owh, I am so extremely happy today. You know why ? I have just received the first ever love letter this year, in my new address ! It's akin to winning a Ferrari from a contest you didn't even enter, hahaha ! On the envelope, it was written, [ The One & Only ]...

Not that my girlfriend has not sent me any. To make the record straight, she has. But I don't consider it as a love letter as it is full of grumblings :-p

This love letter is from my dearest meimei Lyn. Perhaps it''s not that suitable to call it a love letter, but tak kesah lah i. I'm luvin it, asalkan surat Lyn yang tulis.

Surat tue mengandungi tiga muka. 第一面,算是情信吧,Lyn說她最近好不好,又說她最近沒有skip午餐,有好好幫我照顧美媚,不過代價就是... hahaha you go and guess what the price is.

Thank you Lyn. Surat tu menceriakah hidupku. Bukan jugak sumer jejaka yang jarang balas surat kan ? Gege akan buktikan nanti, hehe.

A national disservice

Elizabeth Wong

Ahmad Harizal Ahmad Fauzie is an accidental hero, whether he knows it or not.

It started out as a search for the example of what would happen to youths who dared to contemplate skipping national service.

The full force of the law will come down hard on you.

You will be hunted, arrested, interrogated by the police and charged in court.

The deputy public prosecutor and the magistrate will perform according to the given script.

Resistance is futile.

So Ahmad Harizal was found guilty and emerged handcuffed from the court under the full glare of the media to serve his 14-day sentence. His family could not pay the RM 600 fine to save him from the penal colony of Kangar.

This was supposed to be the landmark case.

But the scripted text of a naughty National Service dodger quickly unravelled to that of a young man forced to quit school while in his early teens to take on poorly paid piecemeal work to help out family expenses, and who, not only could not afford a lawyer but had to borrow RM7 to attend his own hearing.

It is to the credit of the protesting public who highlighted the unpalatable state of affairs, to the point where the Attorney-General and the Deputy Prime Minister were pressured to issue separate public statements, albeit blaming the young man for not telling the 'truth' to the police, and ignoring what was told to the magistrate in court during mitigation.

Don't cry headmistress 《

"Don't cry headmistress" is a documentary made by independent filmmakers, broadcasted on Public Television Service, Taiwan.. It is about the story of a headmistress in a junior high school in Taichung prefecture, the only that allocates students through normal distribution. All the other schools practises streaming, where the brainys are separated from the sillys.

The opportunity came when this lady was being appointed the headmistress of a new school. Instead of exams and tuitions, her students' days are filled with activities such as understanding the nature and environment as well as learning survival skills. For her, it is as important to know the local society and nature as grasping the worldly knowledges. She also banned physical punishment in the school.

As a exam and result-oriented society, the methods the school is run do not sit well with the parents. They prefer more classes and less outings. Quite a number of teachers do not share the headmistress' aspirations too. For them, the most important task is to fed the students with all the answers so they can go through the numerous exams and get into a good senior high school.

The schools was directed to reduce the number of classes as the enrolment dwindled. Under tremendous pressure, the headmistress was asked to opt for early retirement. Only about more than ten teachers attended it, so the headmistress said, "Those who come today are all my good friends"...

Apparently there are still a lot of people among us who ignores the jungle for a tree. Values, sports and critical thinking have no place in their chase towards fame. But being romantically idealist might not achieve the aim too. So the problem is, how to implement it in an acceptable manner when we have a good plan.

You may watch the documentary online, windows media player 9 required, in Bahasa Mandarin.

A thought provoking review on the show.... waylim's blog.

Up close with Ayah Pin and Kerajaan Langit

By now many of you have heard of Ayah Pin and his Kerajaan Langit (Celestial Kingdom), a paradise he set up on earth, attracting international followers of different religions. But as usual, most of them are Malay Muslim Malaysians. That's why they are under Jakim (Islamic Development Department)'s radar screen (Yeah, I know some non-Malay cult followers, government doesn't see them as threat to nation).

Apostasy is a major issue in this country. While for non-Muslims, changing religion at will or practising two religions simutaneusly (normally the result of marriage or attracted to another religion while keeps family's) is common, the same cannot be said for Muslims eventhough faith freedom is provided in Federal Constitution. As the religion is a state matter, the penalty for apostasy is different from state to state. Further more, someone must also convince us how's the line between a religion and a cult being drawn..

Ayah Pin has renounced Islam a few years ago, and was sentenced to 11 months of imprisonment by Trengganu Syariah Court during Pas' rule in Trengganu. Now, it's Jakim's turn to take on Ayah Pin. They see deviant teaching as threats to the nation. Why not, recalling what Aum Shinrikyo has done in Tokyo Underground. As Malay cult followers is a national security issue, Ministry of Internal Security took over but found no threat in him. So Jakim has done their part while Ayah Pin is still at large. Another bullet for some to attack "Kerajaan Islam Hadhari".

I once asked Beth Yahp if she had interviewed Ayah Pin together with the The Edge team when I learned that she is a Off The Edge contributor. No, she said, but she wished to. So am I. It's really a hillarious interview. The interviewee was giving crazy answers so the interviewers asked silly questions to get more of those.

Former member of rock band Def Gab C, Rosli, acts as Kerajaan Langit's contact in Kuala Lumpur. He has accompanied the team from The Edge throughout the interview. Something happened in the end.

Pada penghujung wawancara, Rosli dengan perlahan menanyakan kami, “Off The Edge ini, banyak orang Melayu baca tak?”

“Ade jugak. Campur-campur le.”

“Oh,” angguk Rosli. Dia kelihatan bimbang....

Sit back and enjoy the interview...

Gunung Brinchang, 2032m

On 23rd April 2005, my dad and I was in Cameron Highland. Having exhausted other places of interest such Sungai Palas and Habu tea plantations as well as Robinson and Parit Waterfalls, we thought of exploring a new place, Gunung Brinchang.

Gunung Brinchang is the highest point in Cameron Highlands, 2032 meters above sea level, and also the highest point in Peninsular Malaysia which is accessable by road. But obviously, we didn't realise all these then.

I found this road when we were on our way to Sungai Palas tea plantation, which was featured in Boh Tea's TV ads few years back. Before reaching it, there's this signboard at a junction, saying turn left to "Stesen Mikro Gunung Brinchang". No clues on what kind of stesen mikro is it though, whether it is a space shuttle launchpad or satellite station.

Sungai Palas road, on the other hand, branches out from the main Tanah Rata - Brinchang - Tringkap - Kuala Terla - Kampung Raja road after Kea Farm and Equatorial. It's a slopy narrow road on the left, with no proper signboards except one that says Boh Tea's Oomph Tea Shop and another that says SJK (T) Sungai Palas are located inside. It's a narrow one-lane road.

Dreaming of you

Fadlyn messaged me. She said she sometimes dream about me...

Mei mimpikan ge. Ge comel sangat.

Oops, I am so sorry, on behalf of the me in your dream. Would I ever do that to you ? Some more, I bukan chomell sangat la !

To be frank, yes, I cannot deny that I have not been sending you messages for quite some days. But it's more due to my forgetfulness rather than me not loving you. I do. I missed you very much day and night. I am so sorry for being unable to be with you now dear...

Lyn just dedicated the song, "Right here waiting" by Richard Marx. And I will reply her dedication with Liza Hanim's "Biarkan Aku Merinduimu"... Yes, I have been listening to it almost everyday for more than a month now. But I still love it very much. The song reminds me of Lyn.

I blog therefore I am

Cowo panjat pokok petik kelapa, cewek pergi pasar beli banana,

I am getting tired with my existing blog, Ada apa dengan ShinShin. People don't come to discuss issues in an intelligent manner. They prefer to bitch about whether the model should wear more or reveal more. By the way, Ekspres Wau is the tentative name, which is yet to be finalised.

Perhaps it's high time for me to gradually resign from pretending to be an armchair philosopher who argues with Menj and Pakdi for the sake of eyeballs. There are many more brilliant young minds who can spearhead the message of reform much more efficiently than me, like it or not.

There will be no politics here, a place reserved for bitching, romance, life as well as coffee breaks. All are welcome, old and new visitors. As for links, only those who have nothing to do with politics will be admitted. Apparently all are chics except for Nazmi. Perhaps there are a few deadly omissions but I am too lazy to add them now.

Finally, I don't need to blog for the sake of blogging anymore. I can blog for myself ! I love you ! Aku cinta padamu !
