Rainmakers

   Archaeologists have struck lightning in a Mexican volcanic lake: Their dives in frigid water at an elevation of 13,832 feet turned up eight wooden scepters shaped like bolts from the sky, likely used to sway the Aztec rain god, Tlaloc.

   After the Spanish conquest in the early 1500s, colonial historians wrote of local efforts to get more rain ― or break from too much.

   Now, in the first archaeological study of the two sacred the lake in the Nevado de Toluca crater, a team led by PIlar Luna Erreguerena of the National Institute of Anthropology and History has uncovered artifacts that math the Spanish reports: the scepters, incense shaped into balls and cons, and spines form the maguey plant, probably used to draw sacrificial blood from tongues, earlobes, and penises. Future work may yet reveal evidence of the most tragic ritual, the sacrifice of children. ―A. R. Williams

The five-strong scientific team covered 190km, averaging 12-15km a day, through the Erg Oriental, southern .

Two members recorded key plant species, while the other three counted the frequency of animal signs.

"One of the results we found was that there was a network of three or four wells about 30-40km apart," recalled Dr Wacher.

"The further we got from those wells, the more signs of gazelles we saw; they avoid human contact."

Sand specialists

A team of Tunisian and British biologists have carried out the first survey of its kind to focus on the slender-horned gazelle (Gazella leptoceros).

Very little is known about the endangered species, which is unique to the northern Sahara , as a result of the hostile environment it inhabits.

"It is a specialist sand-living species, among the dune sheets," explained Tim Wacher from the Zoological Society of London.

"They walk a tight-rope in order to survive."

Scrum for last Olympic tickets

  There have been chaotic scenes in Beijing as the last trance of tickets for the Olympic games went on sale. Police had to call in reinforcements to hold back surging crowds. Daniel Griffiths has this report.

 On a hot, smoggy morning, thousands of people from all over China queued to buy the remaining tickets for the Olympics. Many of them had waited for days - sleeping outside on mats or in deckchairs.

 Tempers flared in the intense heat, with people shouting and surging forward. Police and other security personnel struggled to hold them back. Eight hundred and twenty thousand tickets are on sale across the country for events at all the Olympic venues.

 Some people wanted tickets for certain events, but others I spoke too didn't seem to care what ticket they got, just as long as they had a chance to see the Olympic games in their own country.                                                               Daniel Griffiths, BBC News, Beijing
