REPORT ON KATHINA ROBE OFFERING CEREMONY ON 18TH Nov 2007
On 18th November 2007, Buddhist Life Mission and Bodhiraja Buddhist Society in Singapore jointly organized a historic Kathina robe-offering ceremony at the Metta School in Simei. Why historic? Well, as far as we know, this is the first time that monks from all three Buddhist traditions (Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayana) are coming together in such a ceremony in Singapore.
Although the Kathina robe-offering ceremony is usually observed only in the Theravada temples, it is a tradition that dates back to the time of the Buddha himself. Hence it should be relevant and acceptable to all Buddhist monastic orders. All too often, we tend to highlight the differences between the traditions rather than to note the similarities. The congregation of 100 monks who were present at the ceremony came from various nationalities – Taiwan, Sri Lanka, India, Burma, Thailand, Singapore, and Malaysia. They embodied the brotherhood and the unity of the Buddhist Sangha as One.
The ceremony was presided by Ven Hai Tao and Ven Omalpe Sobhita Thero, and specially blessed by the presence of 86-years old Most Venerable Napana Pemasiri Maha Thero of Sri Lanka and Khen Rinpoche Lobsang Palden of Sera Jey Monastery in South India.
More than 2000 devotees took part in the ceremony which stretched throughout the day. Pindapata (alms begging) in the Theravada tradition was carried out by the monks in the late morning. This was followed by the main robe-offering ceremony and dhamma sermons by the various distinguished monks. For many of the participants, the event was a unique experience. As one devotee remarked, “This event opened my mind to many new things in Buddhism. I never knew anything about Pindapata or Kathina or much about other Buddhist traditions. I enjoyed today’s programmes. Although it was a long day, I felt spiritually recharged after and now I want to learn more!”
Ultimately, what mattered was not how many robes were sold, or how much funds we raised but a rare opportunity to share the Dhamma, to foster openness among and build bridges across the various traditions for better mutual understanding and co-operation to ensure the future of Buddhism in a highly volatile world.

2007年11月18日在新加坡Simei市Metta 學校，舉行供養袈裟典禮，這是由新加坡宗教組織共同舉辦的一項具有歷史性意義的活動。為什麼說是有歷史意義？因為這是來自大乘、小乘以及藏傳佛教第一次的聯合舉辦。
雖然目前只有在Theravada 寺廟舉辦這項傳統活動，但是這樣的制度是源自於釋迦牟尼佛時代。通常，我們會將各教派與以區別，而忽略祂們都是釋迦牟尼佛的傳承。現在我們很高興的看到，來自台灣，斯裡蘭卡，印度，緬甸，泰國，新加坡和馬來西亞等地區的一百多位僧侶，展現出佛法平等無別的以及團結合作精神。
典禮由海濤法師和Ven Omalpe Sobhita Thero 主持，並特別邀請到86歲的斯裡蘭卡Napana Pemasiri Maha Thero 長老和印度色拉傑佛學院的Khen Rinpoche參加。
超過2000名信眾參加全天的典禮。 上午僧侶們進行了在Theravada 傳規裡的Pindapata(托缽)。 接著是供養袈裟的儀式及各諸山長老的開示；這真是非常殊勝的經歷。正如一名參予者說；非常喜歡這樣的活動，雖然時間很長，但是讓我學習到很多之後，感到法喜充滿。
最後，重要的不是我們募集到多少袈裟，而是透過這樣的活動，我們分享到珍貴的法益，而所籌措到的資金，我們計劃用在未來籌辦各種相關的宗教活動當中，同時在動盪不安的大環境中，為促進世界吉祥安樂而努力。
