1949年西藏被中國佔領。自此，西藏人權被嚴重侵害，數以千計的西藏人每年被迫離開家鄉流亡海外成為難民。
「西藏國家隊」是利用2008北京奧運為平台，當全世界鎂光燈聚焦在中國時，對中國施以壓力希望能真正改善西藏的處境。「西藏國家隊」的核心在於，由流亡藏人所組成的「西藏國家隊」夢想能與其他國家代表隊一樣參加奧運。全世界各地支持這個行動的朋友，相信西藏被非法佔領的問題是需要政治解決的，並且希望支持他們目標的微弱聲音能被聽見。
