April 29th, rains never stop the volunteers to show up at the gathering point. I was the only one who didn’t know Mandarin but it wasn’t an obstacle to try to communicate with others. The volunteers –who usually are young people-, try to make you feel comfortable so it was easy to mingle. The staffs were also looking after you and ensure that you have a really good time.
Before arriving to the first village, the coordinators distributed a list with the names of the volunteers and people in charge of the different tasks. The tasks range from doctors to cookers, the work was organized very efficiently. The goal was to help and work together to bring medical assistance and to supply villagers with donations of clothes, shoes or articles.
When we arrived to the first village, we all knew that we were not just confine to our tasks but to help in any other way as possible such as unloading chairs, tables or giving an extra hand where it was needed.
The word was spread out in the village through speakers. The villagers started to come and line up for help. While they were going through each station –general doctor, dentists, pharmacy and clothe stations- you could see from a concern look on their faces to a smile. It was simply satisfaction. The doctors show trust and the villagers felt confident to tell them all their sicknesses and pains.
After they give them their medicine, the villagers had to pass to the next station which I called “The Give Away Station” and I was working in. Me and my group had to encourage people to try on some clothe, shoes, and even though to take the things with them. Most of the villagers were a little bit ashamed or though that the things we were offering were for sale. A couple of minutes later, the villagers gain up some courage and start to ask for a specific size of shoes or clothe. It felt like working in a shop for free and the pay off was the happiness of each family. As the number of villagers started to decrease to cero, the group started to pack everything and move to the next village.
No one said it was easy to get to all the villages. Unfortunately, the bad weather won. The roads became a little dangerous so the staff decided to change plans and visit another village. I could say that if some one asks me if I will do this again, certainly I will!
Besides the great feeling that this two days experience leave you in your heart, you are able to meet great people –from the doctors to each volunteer counting the drivers that always try to get us on time and safe to every village--, to explore the culture of Taiwan and its beautiful natural environments.
