Between the Video Shelves I
Ebisu sneaks around the video shelves in a Japanimation store in downtown San Francisco. She doesn't know why she is doing this. But her target is obvious--her ex-boyfriend whom she broke up with 8 years ago. He is among a group of friends. They all look like they are regulars here, judging from the way they comfortably occupy the space on the other side of the counter.
They must be members, Ebisu thought.
Suddenly he leaves his buddies to walk in the aisle by himself. Ebisu nimbly moves to one aisle behind, where she could observe him from a safe distance. He is still wearing the same forest green windbreaker. It looks quite new so it can't be the one he was wearing when they were seeing each other. He must really like forest green. Ebisu wonders if he is still driving that forest green Accord. She remembers that shortly after he got that car, one of the windows got smashed one night when he stayed over in her apartment. Ebisu turns around to look out of the store front, hoping to identify the car but to no avail.
Ebisu moves toward the door and sees a young Asian kid with spiky hair coming her way.
"May I help you find something, Ma'am?"
So the kid is got manners, Ebisu thought. But she just wants to send him away and not draw any attention.
"I am just browsing, thanks."
Showing a teethy smile, the kid goes on,
"Okay, Ma'am. Just want you to know that we have a special deal for new members this month. You can get 25 animation DVDs for the rental price of 20. This only applies to the first 10 people who apply for membership today. And ma'am, I would just like to inform you that nine people have already applied for this special deal today."
Ebisu nervously looks behind her. There are at least five other people browsing in various isles, including her "target object." She does not understand why she is being given all the attention.
"Look, thanks for the information. Perhaps you should make this available to other customers as well..."
The spiky hair smiles mysteriously.
"No problem. Please enjoy browsing in our store. We've got new titles in this very isle."
He starts turning around to go back to the counter.
"By the way ma'am," he turns back and lowers his voice, "they are already members."
