In addition to the courses traditionally offered in the summer jazz academy program, this year TISJA will introduce New Orleans style ensemble first-time-ever regionally, alongside with the Latin percussion ensemble and Jazz Big Band training. These styles will be taught in ensembles, lectures, workshops and performed in faculty and student concert programs. Further, for the first-timers, more basic courses will be added. The advanced courses include Modern jazz, Latin, African style, Funk, Soul and R&B ensembles & etc. The master workshop is also present during the camp. The regular coursework will feature the following:
1. Individual Lessons
Brass (Trumpet, Trombone, Baritone, Euphonium, Tuba), Woodwinds (Alto Sax, Tenor Sax, Baritone Sax, Clarinet, Flute), Strings (Violin, Viola, Cello), Piano, Guitar, Double Bass & Electric Bass, Drums, Latin Percussion, Voice (Male & Female), Miscellaneous Instruments (Please inquiry if you do not see your instrument listed here <info@taipeijazz.com>)
2. Ensembles
a. Project Ensembles: Ensembles with various jazz styles, vocalist with rhythm section, vocal ensemble, black music ensemble, Latin, African and world music ensembles.b. Ensembles in various styles and will perform in the concerts held in Shih-Chien University or in the Da-Ann Forest Park.
c. Students should follow the rules during the camp and not to be late or absent to the classes, the concert and the performances in the Da-Ann Forest Park.
3. Group lessons
a. Workshops: Introduction of Styles, Stage Interaction, Jazz Masters Tributes (2004: Pianist Bill Evans, 2005: Jazz Saxophone Masters, 2006: Afro-Cuban Music Styles, 2007: Groovy Jazz styles, 2008: Jazz Trombone and Ensemble)
b. Theory Lessons: Jazz Harmony, Jazz Rhythm, Jazz Form and Jazz Analysis.
c. Master classes: Students learn from not only the faculty of their own instrument but also the faculties of other instruments such as “Latin Style”, “Funk & Fusion Style”, “Vocal & Guitar Duo”, “Bass & Drums Workout” and “Sax & Woodwinds Techniques”
d. Improvisation: Students learn to play jazz easily through the improvisation lessons.
e. Ensembles: Group Improvisation, students learn to play with other people during the ensemble lessons.
f. Basic Lessons: Designed for students having the ability to play instrument or sing but not familiar with jazz music playing.
g. Advanced Lessons: Piano students will study the playing techniques of Latin, Funk, Soul, R&B. All the advanced students will study Modern Jazz Styles, Advanced Improvisation Skills, etc.
4. Chat Sessions and Career Advice
◎ The theory-related lessons will be given mainly during 9:00-12:00, the individual lessons and the workshops/master classes will be given mainly during 13:00-16:00 and the ensemble lessons will be given mainly during 13:00-20:00.
- Jam Sessions are during the lunch time and the dinner time everyday
- Master Jam Sessions start at 8:00PM every night
- The later period of the camp are the preparation for concert, performances in the Recital Hall of USC and Da-Ann Forest Park
Students can choose to be housed in the dormitory of Shih-Chien University or commute. All the students are required to participate in all the courses/activities. The new 2009 Lesson Schedule will be published in June.
