不知道China(中國)跟Chinese(中國人),這兩個單字,兩者之間有啥不同。
所以當她看見黑人,她就問出這樣的問題「Are you a CHINA?」
"Are you a China?"
OK, so picture this. One of my workmates has a 3-year-old daughter, a little Australian girl with blonde hair and huge blue eyes. They currently have a Chinese overseas student living with them, the first non-Australian the little girl has ever met.
My workmate, Beth, and her daughter are in the supermarket pushing a trolley full of groceries down the aisle when they come across a group of ten or so Asians shopping. Beth can’t get her trolley past them, so she says, “Excuse me”.
The Asians are all very polite and apologetic ... “Sorry, sorry, sorry!” they say as they move aside to let Beth past. Beth pushes her trolley through and continues down the aisle, but the little girl stops in front of one of the Asian girls and stares up up her with her mouth wide open.
“Are you a China?” she asks innocently.
“No, actually I’m Japanese,” the Asian girl says in a perfect English accent.
“You’ve got pretty eyes!” the little girl says.
Beth notices and comes back to get her. They continue on to the check out, and right in front of them stands a tall, black-black-black African girl with long braided hair.
The little girl stops in front of her agape, stares up at her with her mouth wide open. “Are you a China?” she asks. “You’ve got pretty eyes!”
