To friends and supporters of Mae Tao Clinic and to supporters of human rights,  democracy and peace throughout the world, I am writing to call on the international community and organizations to stand by the people of Burma, by condemning the recent arrest and trial of Aung San Suu Kyi, yet another example of the regimes utter disrespect for human rights and democracy.

The accusations against Aung San Suu Kyi are ugly and damaging not only to the people of Burma but to the reputation of governance in Asia. At the same time the reaction of the international community to the regime, is of utmost importance to the 50 million people of Burma whose lives are constantly in the throes of uncertainty, trauma and confusion. It is the responsibility of all
individuals, organizations and governments to protect those who are only abused by their leaders.

The Burmese regime has made some effort to present a positive face to the international community by establishing elections in 2010. Yet, in preparing for these sham elections, they have increased their oppression of their people, and the arrest of Aung San Su Kyi is another example of how they will stop at nothing to ensure that the elections have only one outcome, that is the election of the current regime.

We need to join our voices with the brave people who continue to risk their lives for the sake of freedom, those such as Min Ko Naing and U Win Tin. We need to demand the release of all political prisoners and for free and fair participation in developing and holding election processes.

The violence in the border areas of Burma continues, as the regime tries to coerce the ethnic ceasefire groups into policing the border areas. This is resulting in instability, and increased fighting causing more people spilling into neighbouring countries. The continued oppression of the ethnic groups within Burma guarantees that any election will be unjust and biased as large sections of society will be unable to participate.

Aung San Suu Kyi has said that it is never too late and therefore it is never too late for Burma to have a chance for true reconciliation and for all parties, including the National League For Democracy and the ethnic groups to join together.

Some of the international community has been calling for engagement with the regime, but those who choose to engage with the regime must be clear about who they stand for and engage only in a way that is with and for the people of Burma. There must be a thorough collaboration with all sectors of society including those at the grassroots level.

For the sake of the future of Burma and therefore for the sake of the future of Asia it is imperative that the current oppression of the citizens of Burma stops. The environmental destruction, deprivation, lack of the most basic health and education services are a humanitarian crisis. Displacement, loss of identity and lack of citizenship are creating a crisis for the next generation of Burmese. The damage to the future is already evident.

I am writing to ask that, we as human rights defenders, show our support and solidarity with the courageous people of Burma who continue to speak out against the atrocities and crimes of a government. It is our job to prevent these and to promote peace, human rights and democracy.

美國總統布希夫人蘿拉‧布希7日前往泰緬邊界的密蘇特難民營，訪問流亡的緬甸克倫族，她呼籲緬甸軍政府與反對黨展開對話，並敦促中國和其他國家加入美國行列，制裁軍政府。

蘿拉走訪密蘇特難民營的同時，布希總統在曼谷發表遠東政策演講，並與流亡的緬甸異議人士和政治人物會面，而8日正好是緬甸民運20週年紀念日，緬甸流亡人士也將至中國和緬甸大使館進行抗議活動。

緬甸納爾基斯風暴已過去16天了。儘管面臨國際社會不斷的壓力，緬甸軍政府仍遲遲不願打開國門接受大批外援。同時，緬甸受災最嚴重的伊洛瓦底三角洲的災民們開始指責政府不僅沒有給與他們必要的救援，而且還開槍射殺手無寸鐵的災民。請聽本台綜合報導：重災區伊洛瓦底三角洲估計有250萬人由於這場風暴陷於貧困之中，不得不依賴於當地的食品救援生存。災民們抱怨說，軍政府根本不關心他們的艱難生活，政府只給他們當地的1650人分發了3-4袋大米【錄音】：「其他組織在幫助我們，但政府沒有。我們對這很不滿。但是我們不敢告訴那些救援組織，因為如果我們告訴他們，我們會有很大的麻煩。」

緬甸風災後，緬甸難民醫院－梅道診所（Mae Tao Clinic）立即發起救災募款活動，將透過長期合作的緬甸境內草根性組織，在當地購買物質和藥品，派遣在地救助人員前往災區協助受難家庭，對於長期工作量龐大和經費已短缺的梅道診所等草根團體來說，這絕對不是個容易的任務，卻是眾人視為最緊急且迫切的使命，只因，民眾永遠比軍政府更關切著自己同胞們的疾苦和幸福！

緬甸周六遭遇特強氣旋風暴襲擊， 造成將近4千人死亡，3千人下落不明。死亡人數仍然會上升。

緬甸媒體稱，死亡人數達到3,969人，大批人無家可歸。報道說，在伊洛瓦底江(Irrawaddy)三角洲的伯格勒城(Bogale) 和Laputta的兩個城鎮，可能有數千人死亡。

辛西雅醫生十二月來台領取亞洲民主人權獎

（中央社記者李佳霏台北十九日電）台灣民主基金會董事長王金平今天宣布，「二○○七年亞洲民主人權獎」得主是梅道診所的創辦人辛西雅˙蒙格（Cynthia Maung）。她將在十二月十三日親自來台，從總統陳水扁手上接下獎座與十萬美元的獎金。

轉貼自邊境漂流

我們無法視而不見二十年流亡海外對於返回故土的渴望，四十年貧病困苦對於重建家園的想望，由僧侶和民眾攜手平和燃起的番紅花希望之火，換來的確是緬甸軍隊以自動步槍瞄準著人民的胸口，緬甸政府以鏈條繩索銬鎖著百姓的雙手，千萬民眾渴求和平民主的身心再度受到無情壓迫，手無寸鐵的人們鮮血再次濺灑於仰光街頭。心中甚至不願也不敢想像的是，在泰緬邊境難民朋友們內心的悲憤和失望，以及遭到逮捕監禁的僧侶民眾是否能平安歸來。

上天曾經眷顧了這塊富藏物產的土地，卻似乎忘了照護這群真誠和善的子民。

緬甸情勢持續升高，僧侶廿五日無視於軍政府派出軍警鎮壓的警告，繼續集結十萬人在第一大城仰光街頭遊行抗議，政府則果真派出數百軍警進駐市中心，仰光市內山雨欲來，氣氛緊張。

遊行隊伍廿五日行經市中心蘇雷塔、市政府一帶時，尚不見軍警蹤影，等隊伍離去後，但見八輛卡車運來配備步槍、警棍和盾牌的鎮暴警察，另有十一輛軍用卡車載來士兵，每車約廿人，部署在市政府四周，顯然是要緊緊控制市中心一帶，阻止進行了八天的遊行繼續下去。

東緬甸的難民情況始終沒有改善，為了呼籲國際社會的關注，美國支援緬甸運動今年邀請了熱門電視影集「星艦迷航記」中扮演契柯夫中校的凱尼格訪問泰國、緬甸邊境的難民營。

美國支援緬甸運動的伍壯表示，比起現在全球關注的蘇丹達佛地區，事實上，東緬甸的情況更加惡化，遭到摧毀與迫害的民眾，是達佛地區的兩倍之多，但是卻一直缺乏國際社會的關注；因此美國支援緬甸運動希望透過凱尼格的造訪，吸引更多對於東緬甸的關注。

每個月，在泰緬邊境的美索鎮，都有一些小孩無緣無故失蹤，特別是在伊斯蘭教社區中，一名社區的領導人指出，這些小孩都是被人口販子帶走，也顯示出泰國邊境人口販賣問題的嚴重性。

穆斯林社區所遭遇到的問題最大，社區領導人童蘇指出，這些失蹤的兒童，很多都是被人口販子騙走，送到曼谷、北欖坡，甚至馬來西亞當乞丐、童工或是從事色情行業，也有一些兒童淪為小偷。

有一個國家，經歷了45年的軍事統治，期間領導者刻意將它「與世隔絕」，它的經濟和旅業，是否已經停滯不前？

是的，東南亞小國緬甸，近年政治環境並無好轉，孤立、貧困成為它的代名詞。

不過正因如此，才份外顯出它的神秘感。還好，主要城市和寺廟沒有被「閉關」，吸引了不少外國遊客進駐觀光。

泰緬邊境以山為隔、以河為界，湄河將泰國和緬甸分隔在兩岸，泰國一側的邊境城鎮湄索與緬甸一側的妙瓦縣隔河相望。

如果在大白天沿著湄河一路走下去，你就會發現這是一個安靜、祥和的地方。

只有少數過境者在連接泰緬邊境的友誼橋上行走，因為大部分邊境居民都在家中睡大覺，或者在與朋友閑聊。

Thai traders look forward to increased border trade in Karen State in Burma and Tak Province in Thailand, if negotiations between the Karen National Union and Burmese officials are successful.    

Ampol Chartchaiyaruek of the Tak Province Chamber of Commerce said the situation in Karen State, which lies opposite of Tak province, following the recent death of General Bo Mya may offer a renewed chance for successful negotiations.

“If both groups could reach an agreement on the problems of illegal immigrants then it would help the refugee problem," he said. Any political breakthrough could also lead the Burmese government to place fewer restrictions on products from Thailand, he said.

前克倫族(Karen)領袖 帽梅(Bo Mya)

緬甸‧克民盟前領袖逝世（星洲日報／國際 2006.12.24）

（仰光訊）緬甸克倫民族聯盟秘書長帕多說，
克民盟前領袖帽梅今日（週日，24日）在泰國逝世，終年79歲。

克民盟是對抗緬甸軍政府的最大族群叛亂組織。
帕多表示，曾領導克民盟超過20年的帽梅，
於當地時間凌晨2時（大馬時間凌晨3時）在西北部的邊境小鎮湄索逝世。
他生前罹患糖尿病已有一段日子。

「難民女醫師辛西雅與梅道診所」
