I will miss the people here.
Depending on the notice period, we'll leave either the last weekend in September or the first weekend in October. Should know on Tuesday what the final leaving date is at work.

SoCNoC (Southern Cross Novel Challenge), the Antipodean version of NaNoWriMo, kicks off on Sunday. As I missed last year’s NaNo because of emigrating (and will likely miss this year’s because of touring the North Island with Petra and packing again etc), I decided to take part. Also I’m on a writing challenge kick, having done 70 Days of Sweat and the ecata Novella in a Month things. It keeps me off the streets, anyway.
The problem is I don’t know what to work on through June.

Updated the wordcounts. Due to the explosion and lack of time, I definitely won't manage 100k for Sven, but I'll be happy with 90k instead. Meanwhile as I'm a challenge freak, I've signed up for the novella in a month thing for May and the Antipodean version of NaNoWriMo, which is called SoCNoC (Southern Cross Novel Challenge, in June - midwinter here in NZ).

(btw Niki I actually like your banner more than the avatar! That's a very sexy pic. Understated yet blatant at the same time. Very nice)At the other extreme, I've got to say that the dude with the shades advertising Mamastar scares the heck out of me.

Last night, I finished reading Bundori by Laura Joh Rowland. A few years ago I picked up one of her books when I was shopping with Rachel, but for some reason I didn't buy it and then I forgot Rowland's name... until I saw a post on Dear Author a few weeks ago that reminded me.
For all its other faults, Invercargill does have a very good library, and it has the majority of Rowland's samurai detective series. I wasn't entirely convinced by the first book but as I am craving for a new detective series I thought I'd continue with it anyway. Rowland doesn't have the darkness of Barbara Nadel nor the wit of Susanna Gregory, but she's a smooth read and the whodunnit aspect is satisfying enough.
It probably says something about me that I find the hero Sano a bit insipid, but his arch-rival Chamberlain Yanagisawa absolutely mesmerising. Beautiful, vicious, intelligent, kinky and gay, Yanagisawa is only 'on page' for a little while but for me he absolutely burns with character. The only thing that squashes my squee is that I really don't see why, at this point in the series, Yanagisawa is so hysterically paranoid about Sano being a threat to his power. After the end of Bundori I can totally understand his hatred of Sano - but before? No way.

I finished Fire last night!! It came in at 70,282 words. Considering it was meant to be 30k when I first had the idea... *roll eyes* But I'm really, really happy with it. QF and YN are adorable and make the cutest couple. Now to let them rest for a good wee while before I even think of the sequel LOL.
