There is no such thing as freedom. There is only limited choice.
The process that we go through so that our choices are controlled is a life long process that begins in infancy with family and is continued throughout the rest of our lives by our peers and mainly by the state and mass media. These last two forces in determining our decisions; government and business have become virtually indistinguishable from each other. Together they have turned propaganda and advertising into subtle and powerful tools for manipulating people’s fears and desires.
“Urban bodies” is a collection of artworks by two Taiwanese and three foreign artists that explores some of the drives and motives behind human behavior. The artists use different mediums and approaches to investigate the reasons and root causes behind human decisions. The work focuses mainly on issues such as conformity, belief, fear, desire and consumerism. Each artist brings a unique style and flavor to the exhibition using vastly different techniques to address these issues, ranging from video art and installation to sculpture and graphic novels.
From an early age humans are taught a conditioned response to the concept of reward and punishment. Sigmund Freud tells us that this will develop into the two major forces for influencing our decisions;
The avoidance of pain and the quest for pleasure.
Mass media plays on these deep-seated impulses to exert influence and control the masses. By ignoring the needs but fulfilling the unconscious desires of the masses changes a potentially unruly population into a controlled, docile one.
The work in this exhibition aims to open a debate about free-will in the light of such overpowering determinism, and raises questions about the way in which human worth is judged.
