I am a 26-year old girl who is not a typical NTU graduate. I've never been a graduate school student or a business office lady. However, I've tried many kinds of career opportunities and nurtured my hobbies in the past few years.
I started mountain climbing two and half years ago. In the beginning, I just attracted by the photos of some peaks, and then I participated in various related trainings, such as rock climbing, long-term backpacking, project activity programming, leadership, etc. I've completed a 5-day solo hike in M.T. Nan-hu area which is a famous peak in Taroko National Park.
Although I've never done outdoor activities until graduated from the University, all of my jobs are related to it, such as social workers of teenagers and the assistant of mountain guides. I gained not only outdoor skills but also the confidence of facing uncertainty and convinced the value of challenge. In order to share these experiences widely, I created this blog in which I posted related photos and reflections.
Through this blog, I made friends with who have the same hobby and who was curious about this field. Besides still going hiking with people who have different backgrounds, I continued to broad my points of views through concerning about the environmental news regularly and participating in a wilderness interpreter training of the Society of Wilderness . I hope that I could spread the power of wilderness more and more broadly.
Last year(2005), I took charge of a culture exchange project of Tien Culture Foundation in an aboriginal tribe. Fourteen youth volunteers including ten of them are overseas compatriot students from the United States. The volunteers provided English teaching and companionship to the aboriginal children. On the other hand, the local residents provided home stay and other hospitalities to these teachers. Each side faced some culture shock, but they learned a lot in the process of adaptation and finally made good friends with each other. Although I just a facilitator or say assistant of this project, I was still touched by the members’reflections. As a result, I created an English blog named “Taiwan, touch my heart” to record it .
It also motivated me to participate in similar overseas projects one day, so I started to keep contact with English through reading English news and taking a formal class in a language institute (LTTC). I would seize more opportunities to interact with foreigners in the near future.
Although I have lived in Taiwan for more than twenty years, it seems like I've just started to experience how wonderful it is since I started to touch the wilderness of it. I'll continue to search this land and take people who are from different places to know the beauty of Formosa.
